Y UNITED STATES PATENT CEEIcE.
JAMES M. FRENCH, OF EAST CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED IRON BEDS'I'EAD.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,!63, dated December 16, 18672.
T0 @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. FRENCH, a citizen ofthe United States of America, and a resident ot` East Cambridge, in4 the county ot' Middlesex and State ot Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Iron Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare the same to be t'ully described in the ollowing specification and represented in the ao companying drawings, of which- Figure l is atop view, Fig. 2 a side elevation, and Eig. 3 a longitudinal section, of a bedstead provided or constructed in accordance with my invention. Fie'. et is a top view, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation, of one of its rails. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section ot' part of one ot1 the rails, and part ot' the head or foot trame immediately adjacent thereto. Fig. 7 is an inner side elevation ot' one of the head and foot trames.
The object I have had in view in making my invention was to produce a strong` and durable iron bedstcad, having its rails made of what is usually termed angle-iron. In order to effect this, I construct the bedstead with separate head and foot frames, and so that each ot them shall have two mortises for the reception ot tenons projecting from the two rails, and I also provide each of the rails alongside ot' each ot` its tenons with what may be termed an auxiliary overlapping bearer,77 which, when the rail is inserted in one ofthe head and -'oot trames, runs alongside of or overlaps the inner surface ot' the part in which the mortise is formed, and abuts against the inner side of the adjacent crossrail of the posts ot the trame, and by so doing operating not only to prevent the tenon from being` bent or broken, but to greatly stitt'en or render stable the whole. bedstead.
In the dra-wings, A A A A are thel bedstead posts, two ot' which at the head and two ot' which at the foot of the bedstead are connected together by an angle cross-bar, a, and three or any other suitable number of round rods, b b b, the wholebeing arranged as shown in the drawings. Each post is madewith a J mortise, c, which projects inward beyond the angleiron bar o, as shown in the drawings, and is intended to receive one ot' two tenons, d d, extended trom the ends ot' each ot' the two rails B B. Besides this tenon, there is at each end of each ot the said rails B B a pro jection or bearer, c, which, when the tenon is within its mortise, shoots by or overlaps the niortise projection or bears against it and abuts against the angle-iron bar o, the whole being' as shown in thedrawings. A pin passed through each tenon and its mortise will sutice to hold therails and the posts ot'the head and foot frames together. Each crossbar a is provided with a series of buttons or studs,f
fj', which serve to connect the saching or its equivalent to the bedstead. It' necessary, each of the side rails maybe supplied with similar devices or their equivalents.
By constructing the bedstead in manner as above described I am enabled to make a very substantial and durable one ot'iron. Furthermore, each of the bearers c c operates to prevent its tenon from being bent or broken ott' in a lateral direction.
I do not claim the attachingof the post and rail ot' a bedstead by a tenon and mortise, as I am well aware that this is not new; nor do `I claim making a rail ot what is termed angle-iron.
I claim- The improved bedstead as made, not only with its angle-iron rails B B and head and foot frames connected by tenons and mortises, but with each ot the said rails furnished with bearers c e, constructed and arranged with respect to the tenons and inortises and the. lower bars of the head and foot frames in manner and so as to operate therewith substantially as speciljed.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature.
JAMES M. FRENCH.
