UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HAMNER J. CORDLE, F LITTLETON. NORTH CAROLINA.
METAL BEDSIDE WITH REVERSIBLE LOCK FOR WOODEN BEDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Apr. 28, 1914.
Application filed August 22, 1913. Serial No. 786.151.
siding at Littleton, in the county ofHalifau and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Bedsides with Reversible Locks for lvooden Beds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in I bedsteads and refers particularly to a metal side for use in connection with the usual wooden beds.
The main object of my invention is the provision of metal sides adapted to engage the head and foot members of the bed and to form a substitute for the usual side rails of wood in common use.
Another object of my invention is the provision of metal sides provided with fastenings at their endsadapted to engage suitable keepers carried by the-posts of the head and foot members of the bed, and to thus produce a bed of much stronger and more durable construction than the usual .wood bed rails, and which will remain rigid under tlie heaviest strain,
Another object of my invention is the provision of a metal rail which can be used with beds at the time of manufacture or which may be used in connection with beds in general use, which rails can besupplied at the proper price, which will be of attractive appearance and insure a long life to the bed, which will be comparatively light in weight, and which generally, from every point of view, will prove useful, etlicient and ractical.
With these objects in View, my invention consists of the combination with the head and foot of a bed of metal side rails for connecting said members and supporting the slats embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of one end of a bed showing one of my side rails connected and the other free, for the purpose of illustrating both the construction and application of my invention. Fig. 2 represents a view on an enlarged scale showing the side rail in elevation and the post with keepers in section. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a modified construction ofmy fastening. Fig. i represents a perspective view of the slotted plate carried by the bed post, and Fig. 5 represents a front I view of the face of the fastening.
Referring by letters to the drawings, in which similar characters denote corresponding parts in the several views: The letter A in the surrounding depressed portion or recess I). of said socket the plates E, formed withentranceslots F, and secured to the posts by. fastenings G, within the sockets of the posts being disposed the pair of pins H, serving as will presently appear the function of a catch or keeper. This is the construc tion of the posts of the head and foot members of a bed in connection with which my novel metal side rails are employed.
The preferred form' of my side rail consists of the elongated casting J having a flat bearing face K adapted when in position to rest snugly against the plates E, and formed with a socket or recess L, to receive the inner end of the plate M. The said end of the plate M fits and is secured in the recess of the casting by means of the bolts or screws N, the plate having its outer or free portion provided with a pair of hooks O, which in use enter the slot of the plate E, and engage the pins H, as most clearly shown in Fig. 52, forming a snug'fastening between the casting and post.
In the preferred form of my improvement. the casting in its upper portion is formed with a seat P, in which fits the end of an upper metal rail or tube Q, and in its lower portion is formed with a seat R, in which is received the end of a side rail S, of angular form, one portion of thelower angle-shaped rail forming a support for the usual bed slats. In the other form of my invention in which a single rail T is used, the casting is formed with only one socket or seat U to receiveand support the said single rail T, the operation being the same in both the single and double rail construction, but the double rail being the preferable form by reason of its added strength and durability.
The construction and application of my bed rail will be readily understood, and it will be noted that it is particularly designed for use in connection with beds having wooden head and foot sections, and it is evident that my metal side rails will form a rigid connection between the head and foot of the bed, and provide a broad bearing or engagement between the bed posts, thereby designates one end of a bed having the post. B, provided with sockets C and having fitted insuring a rigid connection and brace and preventing sagging of the bed. It will also be understood that my fastenings can be reversed by simply changing the fastening plates and that the rails may be instantly applied or detached, and that in ever particular the improvement Will proveefiicient and practical. i
I claim:
In a fastening for connecting the head and foot sections of Wooden beds, the combination with the corner posts of the head and foot sections formed with sockets, pins arranged in said sockets, plates secured to the posts and having openings registering with the sockets of said posts, of castings having vertical elongated plates bearing fiat against said face plates and vertical elongated face In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
