UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HAT AND COAT RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,205, dated October 11. 1887.
Application filed March 22, 1887. Serial No. 231,983. (No mrdel.)
To all whom it may concern:
, Be it known that I, THOMAS J. MoCoN- NOUGHAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrisonville, in the county of Cass j and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hat and Coat Racks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in bat and coat racks; and it consists in a certain novel construction and arrangement of parts, fully set forth hereinafter, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the rack. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the base-plate. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line a: 00, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 isa section of the horn, line 1 3 Fig. 3.
Referring byletter to the drawings,in which similar letters denote corresponding parts in all the figures, A designates the base-plate 0f the racl ,of any preferred ornamental pattern, having the perforations a a therein for the reception of screws to secure the same to the wall or other vertical surface, and B is a coatpeg having a stud, b, on the rear end, secured in an opening, B, in thelowerend of theplate.
C 0 represent two perforations near the upper end of the plate and joined on the rear side of the plate by agroove. D, and G is a stout wire passed at the ends through the said perforations from the rear side of the plate, with the wire in the rear of the plate resting or fitting in the groove D between the said perforations, and the front ends of the said wire support bent laterally to form hooks.
I-I designates a horn cut off square at the rear end,and polished and secured to the plate by filling the interior thereof with plaster-ofparis and inserting the ends of the wire G therein while the plaster is soft and pressing the rear or butt end of the horn firmly against the surface of the plate and allowing the said plaster to set.
I is a rod which is passed through aligned openings in the rear end of the horn and riveted at each end on the outside thereof, the object being to prevent the plaster-of-paris, should it become loose, from slipping out of the horn and allowing the said horn to. drop, and the ends of the wire G are designed to pass on either side of the said rod.
horn will prevent the said plaster from slipping out of place. The said wire support is made of very strong wire, and as one of the perforations O is placed vertically over the other it is evident that the horn will be held firmlyand securely in place and strongly braced by the position of the wire support from being dragged down by the weight of the article hung on the outer end thereof.
My improved rack is a very useful and an extremely ornam'ental article, and will be found of great-durability, and the manner of constructing the device is novel and extremely simple, and it may be manufactured very cheaply.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a rack, the plate A, having the perforations G O therein, groove D between the said perforations, and the wire G, to pass at the ends through the said perforations, with the loop of the said wire restingin the said groove D, and the horn H, to be secured on the ends of the said wire, substantially as described.
2. In a rack, the plate A,having the support G projecting therefrom, combined with the horn H, having a short rod, I, secured transversely therein near the buttend, said horn being adapted to be secured on the said sup port G, substantially as described.
3. In a rack, the plate A, having a support, G, thereon, combined with the horn H, adapted to be filled with plaster-of-pa'ris to receive the end of the said support, and the rod Lsecured in aligned openings near the rear end of the horn, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS J. MOCONNOUGHAY.
