Claims (20)

1. A baling apparatus for applying a flexible strap about a bale including: a platen, wall structures at opposite sides of said platen, a compression plate movable toward and away from said wall structure and forming a baling chamber when engaged with said wall structures, a chain track extending continuously through said wall structures, said compression plate, and said platen, a continuous slot communicating with said chain track and the inner surfaces of said baling chamber, a chain slideable in said chain track, a strap clamp adapted to engage the strap on one end of said chain overlying said slot, means engaging said chain to advance said one end of said chain through said track and about a bale enclosed in said baling chamber, means engaging said chain to retract the chain, pulling said strap about the bale in said baling chamber.
2. The structure of claim 1 and in which said slot is laterally offset from said chain track.
3. The structure of claim 1 and including strap advancing means engageable with said strap to move the strap into engagement with said strap clamp.
4. The structure of claim 1 and in which the ends of said track overlap.
5. The structure of claim 1 and in which one of said wall structures includes a movably supported section which is advanceable and retractable relative to the remainder of said one wall structure, said movably supported section including a first chain track section in which the chain is at all times engaged, and a second chain track section in overlapping relation to said first chain track section, said first chain track section being aligned with the chain track in the remainder of said one wall structure, and said second track section aligning with the chain track in said platen when said movably supported section is fully advanced.
6. The structure of claim 5 and in which said movably supported section is moved by movement of said chain.
7. The structure of claim 5 and including lock means on said movable section engageable with said chain to prevent relative movement between said chain and said movable section when said movable section is out of fully advanced position.
8. The structure of claim 5 and including securing means supported adjacent to said movable section and securing overlapping portions of said strap together when said movable section is in retracted position.
9. The structure of claim 5 and including strap cutting means on said one wall structure adjacent to said movable section.
10. The structure of claim 5 and including strap advancing means on said one wall structure adapted to be engageable with the end of said strap to advance said strap into said movable section when the same is in fully advanced position for engagement with said clamp.
11. An apparatus operable upon a length of flexible strap having a free end and a supply end for forming a loop of strap about an object comprising: a frame including a chain track extending entirely around the space within said frame, a chain slideable in said track having a free end normally in a starting position, said frame including a slot communicating with said track and communicating with the interior of said frame, a strap clamp supported at the free end of said chain and overlying said slot, means adapted to support the free end of the tape in the path of movement of said strap clamp after said free end of said chain has traveled about said track and, means for driving the free end of said chain and said strap clamp about said track, and for reversing the movement of said free end of said chain and said strap clamp and adapted to draw the strap about said object upon movement of said free end of said chain to said strarting position.
12. The structure of claim 11 and in which said strap clamp includes a fixed jaw and a movable jaw between which said free end of said strap is adapted to engage.
13. The structure of claim 11 and in which the clamp comprises a bifurcated end including a trapezoidal slot with the narrow end of the slot at the end of the clamp and into which said strap is adapted to extend, and a wedge shaped jaw slidable along one side of said slot.
14. The structure of claim 13 and in which the other side of the slot and the adjoining side of the jaw are provided with toothed surfaces.
15. The structure of claim 11 in which said means for driving said chain includes a sprocket, and means for selectively rotating said sprocket in either direction.
16. The structure of claim 15 and in which said means for driving said chain includes a gear mounted for rotation with said sprocket, and a gear rack engaging said gear for rotating the same.
17. The structure of claim 16 and including a piston and cylinder device engaged with said rack to actuate the same.
18. The structure of claim 11 and in which said track includes overlapping end portions.
19. The structure of claim 18 and in which the end of the track at which said means adapted to support the free end of the the tape is located is inwardly of the end of the track to which said strap clamp is retracted when in said starting position.
20. The structure of claim 18 and including means adapted for securing the overlapping ends of the tape together.
