XVILLIA M G. METZNER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
STOVE-BACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,356, dated September 6, 1887.
Application filed October 15, 1886. Serial No. 216,367. (AIodeL) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, W ILLIAM C. METZNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steve Backs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to adjustable stove backs or linings which are adapted to be extended or contracted both horizontally and vertically to fit fire-boxes of various sizes.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1, 2, and 3 are rear elevations of portions of the back. Fig. i is a rear elevation of the eon1- plete back. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the complete back. Fig. 6 is a view of the end of the back at the left in Fig. 4. Fig. 7 isa section in line ac a: of Fig. 5.
A, shown reversed and by itself in Fig. 1,is the main plate, and forms the greater part of the front of the back. This comprises the three parts A, A", and A. The upper edge of the part A is curved rearwardly to conform to the fire-box. The portion A is set forward far enough from the part A to make an offset, a, deep and wide enough to receive the plate B. At one end of the part A the portion A is set backward to make an offset, a, to receive the edge of the end lining of the firebox. Thispart A, as shown, does not extend to the bottom of the plate A, but stops at the line of junction between A and A. It may, however, extend to the lower edge of A'-.
B is a plate of the same length as the plate The part 13 of said plate B, which lies below the part A, is set backward to correspond with At this end of the plate B is an upward extension, B, which overlies the rear of the part A, such extension being set back from the part B. Said extension is provided with a vertical slot, 13 and a bolt, A pass ing through said slot and a hole, A, in the part A, binds said plates together. A web, B, which is shown as triangular in shape, and
set forward of the part B in the same plane with B, may extend from the side of the extension B downwardly to the upper edge of the plate B to strengthen said extension. The two plates A and 13 together form an even surface to which the remaining plates may be applied.
C is a plate covering the upper portion of the even surface formed by the plates A and B, and extending a short distance beyond said plates at the end opposite the part A and the extension B. Vhen the strengtheningweb 'B" is used, the corner of the plate is cut olf,
so that it may fit smoothly with the web. This plate lies in the same plane with the parts A and B Near its middle it is provided with one or more horizontal slots,G, anda bolt, A, passing through a hole, A, in plate A and one of said slots 0, binds the plate 0 to the plate A.
D is a plate composed of the parts D and D The part D is of proper size to lie in the space over the plate 13 below plate 0, while the part D is set rearwardly and extends upwardly over the lower portion of the plate 0. The part D of the plate D is provided near its middle with one or more horizontal slots, D and a bolt, B, passing through a holc,B, in the plate B and one of the slots D binds said plate D to the plate 13. The outer end of the part D of the plate D is provided with a vertical slot, D", and a bolt, 0", passing through a hole, 0 in the plate G, binds said plates C- and D together.
The plates thus united form a stove-back with practically straight and continuous edges. By loosening the bolts A and O the plates B and D may be lowered to increase the height of the back, and by loosening the bolts A and B the plates 0 and D may be shifted laterally to increase'the length of the back.
The plates A and B may be provided with additional holes, A and B, to receive the bolts A and B when the back is to be extended to an extra length.
I am aware that an adjustable stove-back has been heretofore made of four overlying plates, and I do not broadly claim such a back.
I claim as my invention-- In an adjustable stovebaok, the combina tion of the plate A, having the offset a, the plate 13, lying in such offset and having the extension B, through which a bolt binds said of the latter and said plate D farthest from plate to the plate A, a plate, 0, covering the theextension B, substantially as shown and upper portion of the even surface formed by described. the plates A and B, and bound to the plate A In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 5 by a bolt passing through the plates A and 0 presence of two witnesses.
at about the middle of the upper portion of the plate A, and a plate, D, overlying the WILLIAM METZNER' plates B and O, and bound to the plate B by Witnesses: a bolt at about the middle of the latter plate CYRUS KEHR, [o and bound to the plate 0 by a bolt at the end WILLIAM B. NICHOLSON.
