BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,076, dated August 30, 1887.
Application filed November 2'1, 1886. Serial No. 220,097. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES I. RICHARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of buttons in which the head and shoe are rigidly connected by means of the post which passes into the button-hole; and it consists in a button or stud having a peculiarly-constructed fiat post and an elongated shoe arranged transversely of the post, and adapted for direct entrance into the button-hole by movement thereto in a line with the axis of the post and for locking engagement with the button-hole by slightly turning the button, as hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a button embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is an elevation taken in a plane at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the back of the button.
In the accompanying drawings, Ais the head of the button, B the post, and G the shoe. The post B is made of flat stock,andis formed with a wide attaching head portion, a, a contraction, b, and a slightly-spreading base, 0, to which the shoe 0, made in lanceolar form, is attached. The edges of the shoe 0, at its junction with the post B, are made to coincide with the edges of the base portion a of the post, as shown in Fig. 1, so that no abrupt projection, will be formed at either side of the same beyond the edge of the post. The shoe 0 is made of semicircular cross-section, and is adapted for direct entrance into the buttonhole when moved in the direction of the axis of the post B, and also for direct retraction therefrom, the shoe being made of less length than that of the button-hole into which it is to be passed. Upon passing the shoe 0 directly through the two button-holes of a cuff the head of the button is to be slightly turned, and then .a slight pull upon the parts of the cuff will cause the complete turning of the button, so
' that the shoe 0 will extend transversely across the button-hole, and in this case the widened portion a of the post will be held in the button-hole, so as to prevent the button from turning therein, thus completely locking the same to the cuff.
I claim as my inventione- A button comprising the head A, flat post B, having the widened flaring head portion a, the narrowed-in portion 12, and the expanded base portion 0, with the lanceolar-shaped shoe secured centrally to the base portion 0 of the post, with its opposite edges coincident with the corresponding edges of the post, whereby the button may be readily attached and detached, substantially as described.
