BUTTON OR STUD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 357,179, dated February 8, 1887.

Application filed July 15, 1886. Serial No. 208,100. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. CovELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons or Studs; and I do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming apart of the same, to be a description thereof.

This invention relates to that variety of buttons or studs in which the front and back are rigidly secured to each other by a post.

The improvement consists in employing a post which is bent upon itself into substantially a Vyshape, whereby the button or stud can be more easily and conveniently applied and removed, and yet be securely retained in place. 7

and 5 show buttons embodying the iuventiou with posts slightly varied in form. A is the button head or front, and B is the back, both of which may be of any preferred form or style.

O is the post which connects the front and back, and is secured to both. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, this post is bent or curved into substantiallya V shape, and its ends are secured to the front and back at the center of each, although the attachment may be at otherpoints within the boundaries thereof, if

In applying the button the edge I) of the back is first inserted into the button-hole and the button isslid therein toward the right, Fig. 3, the edge (I of thebutton-hole in the article D passing pp the inclined interior face, 0, of the post until the edged of the button-hole passes over the edge 12 of the button-back.

I am aware that buttons have been made having the post at right angles to the head or front and the back, and secured to the former at its center and to the latter at its edge; also, that buttons have been made having a straight post which is inclined at an angle to the front and back, and attached thereto at one side of the center of each; also, that buttons have been made having an inclined post attached to the back at its centerand to the front at its edge. I do not claim any of such constructions. I

As will be readily seen, by bending the post upon itself into substantially a V form the post is brought much nearer the edges of the back and front than if the post were straight and secured centrally to the back and front at right angles thereto in the usual manner, or were straight and secured in an inclined position to the front and back. Bending the post, as described, also enables the button to be applied and removed with equal facility, whether the back or the front be passed through the button-holes,which is a very desirable feature.

The button or stud herein described having a front and back, and a connecting post of substantially a V shape secured to the adjacent faces of the front and back within the boundaries thereof, substantially as set forth.
