  • the invention relates to a reel for rod or wire having a vertical drum axis and used for coiling hot rod or wire, e.g., coming from a rolling mill or extrusion press, and cooling the rod or wire with a liquid.
  • the drum may have an interrupted inner wall or other guide means such as a ring of vertical rods for forming the inner edge of the coil.
  • a reel for coiling hot rod or wire and cooling the rod or wire with a liquid having a vertical axis rotary open top drum comprising a continuous outer casing
  • annular casing above the outer casing of the drum, which annular casing is fixed against rotation and has a larger diameter than that of the outer casing of the drum
  • the deflectors may, with advantage, be in the form of a ring of radially directed, vertical plates.
  • the internal. diameter of the ring of deflection is preferably equal to or greater than the diameter of the outer casing of the drum.
  • the deflectors which are arranged above the drum and may take the form of plates to prevent the cooling liquid from being forced up out of the drum as it rotates by the action of centrifugal force.
  • the rotation of the liquid is markedly slowed down, particularly if the deflectors are in the form of vertical plates which are directed radially outwards.
  • the liquid may be on a level with the plates and the plates can ensure that the surface of the liquid is stilled. One can thus avoid the formation of a high cone of liquid and avoid forcing the liquid out of the reel.
  • the surface of the liquid can be almost flat even at the height of the deflectors, and it may be impossible for the conical flow to form.
  • the deflectors are held in position by an upper and a lower annulus connected to the annular casing by spacer members.
  • These spacer members may be webs or struts. They may, however, alternatively consist of an uninterrupted upper and lower ring. An uninterrupted ring would not serve tov redirect the flow of any water caused to rise by the action of centrifugal force, but would merely serve to position the circle of deflectors with respect to the annular casing.
  • the annular casing which preferably forms a single unit with the deflectors, may advantageously be able to move axially upward.
  • an overflow channel may be provided on the fixed container to catch the cooling liquid which flows outwards and downwards on the outside when the annular casing is lifted.
  • At least one ram (preferably hydraulic) may be provided for moving the annular casing axially.
  • annular casing can be sealed to the fixed container and since under operating conditions the cooling liquid is located within the annular casing, the upward movement of the annular casing can safely cause cooling liquid located above the level of the container rim to flow down into the overflow channel surrounding the container.
  • the coil of rod or wire resting on say a coiling plate within the drum is also able to be moved upward above the level of the edge of the fixed container, so as to be conveyed off to the side.
  • the upward movement of the annular casing may be omitted when the internal diameter of the deflectors is greater than that of the outer drum wall, and when the guide for the incoming rod or wire is pivotable out of the region of the drum diameter.
  • the say coiling plate with the coiled rod or wire may be raised to the height of the upper edge of the annular casing.
