Abstract

1386250 Web accumulators TUBE PRODUCTS Ltd 21 Dec 1972 [21 Dec 1971] 59446/71 Heading B8R A web accumulator, e.g. for steel strips welded together in lengths and fed to a tube mill, comprises a table for supporting a spiral coil 2 of the web 1 with its axis substantially vertical, means for rotating the coil about the axis, means for feeding web to the inside of the coil and for withdrawing it from the outside whilst maintaining the number of turns in the coil constant, and means defining the maximum outermost and minimum innermost diameters of the coil. A fixed number of turns is always present in the coil, variable amounts of web being stored in the coil by varying the diameters of the turns. The table comprises pairs of cylindrical rollers 7 driven by individual-electric motors and located either radially to the vertical axis or in adjustable screw positions relative to such radii to urge the turns of the coil outwards. The rollers 7 may also be raised at the centre, e.g. by pneumatic rams, or may be supplemented by radial, raisable skids. The maximum and minimum diameters of the coil are defined by idler rollers 5 and 6, the latter rollers being adjustably positioned on a spider 8. Alternatively peripheral walls or drums may be used. The web is fed in by rollers 3 and rollers 10 adjustable on a bridge 9, or by rollers (3), (10<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 7 (not shown), and bolts on a pivotable arm (16). Limit switches adjacent the rollers 5 detect an empty accumulator and stop the mill.
