.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ADDIE BOND, a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cuff-Retainers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speci- Ie iication, in which- Figure l represents in perspective the application of my improved cuff-holder to a dress s leeve or cuff. My invention relates to a device adapted, principally, for confining ladies cuffs, its object being to afford an effective means for securing the cuff to the sleeve of the dress by an 2o elastic or flexible connection easily attached and detached, and which may be readily applied to any sleeve without injury thereto and be concealed when so applied.

It consists in the combination, with the 2 5 shield or guard of a safety-pin, of a fiexible loopl attached to said shield or guard to extend in line with the bar of the pin longitudinally therefrom, whereby, when the pin is affixed to the dress sleeve, the loop may be carried 3o around the button ofthe cuff or otherwise made fast to the cuff, and thus serve to confine the latter in its proper relation to the end of the sleeve, while the tension of the elastic upon the pin will not operate to cause its detach- 3 5 ment, as in other cuff-holders of this class.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents a safety-pin, which may be of any approved construction, having a pointed elastic arm or pin, c, connected to an opposite arm, d, carrying a shield or guard, E, at its extremity to receive and protect the pin-point.

O represents a cord, made preferably of rub- 'bcr or other suitable elastic material, looped and firmly attached to the shield or guard E 4 5 0f the pin.

The attachment of the iiexible loop O to the shield may be effected directly by carrying the free ends of the cord, after it has been doubled in a loop, through an aperture pierced in the 5e end of the shield and then knotting said ends,

as shown in Fig. 2; or, as a modification of this attachment, the loop may be secured to the shield E by means of lateral offsets g g on said shield, which are folded over and bent down upon the two free ends of the looped cord O to firmly clamp and retain the same, as shown in Fig. 3. In either case the loop is so supported that it will extend, without bending, out from the end of the pin in position for ready attachment to the button, and a firm se- 6o cure fastening of the looped cord to the shield or guard of the safety-pinris effected.

In the ordinary use of the device the safetypin is attached in the customary manner upon the inside of the dress-sleeve, where it will be concealed from view, the attachment being preferably made to the seam of the sleeve, as shown in Fig. l. The loop may then be passed over the cuff-button, as required, and will effectively confine it in a neat and secure manner and prevent the cuff from slipping out from the sleeve, without interfering with the free movement of the arm.

I do not claim, broadly, the combination of an elastic loop with a safety-pin, and I am aware that a simple loop of elastic cord has heretofore been drawn through the eye formed in the coiled spring of a safety-pin for facilitati ng the fastening of a necktie toa collar-button, as iu Lawtons patent, No. 113,780, but 8o in practice this device is useless as a cufffastener, from the fact that the rubber cord looped loosely through the eye will soon chafe and break, and, furthermore, because a strain upon the elastic when secured at the end of the pin farthest from its point tends to disengage the pins point from its guard.

My invention differs from the devices heretofore known in the art in that the shield of the pin is utilized to afford a firm secure hold 9o for the ends of the rubber cord, so that they cannot chafe and wear, and the loop is supported thereby in position for effective use at that end of the pin where the tension upon the loop Will operate to tighten and confirm the hold of the pin upon the fabric and prevent its disengagement, while it presents a neater appearance, which admits of more facile :attachment than those now in use.
