CLARENCE C. SPRINKLE, OF MAJENICA, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF TO WVILSON B. SPROW'L AND LEVI E. SPRINKLE, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
BARN- -DOOR FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,649 dated June 28, 1887.
Applicationfilcd April 18, 1887. Serial No. 2' EH82. (Modeh) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE O. SPRINKLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Majenica, in the county of Huntington and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and usefcl Improvements in Barn-Door Fastenings; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view from the inside of abarn-door provided with my improved fastening, showing the door closed and locked. Fig. 2 isa similar view from the outside, showing the door opened and secured open; and Fig. 3 is a view of the fastening.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to fastenings for barn and similar doors; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of 2 5 parts of such a fastening which will serve to secure the door when closed and when opened, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, thenumeral 0 1 indicates the hinge-jamb of the doorway, and the door 2 is hinged upon this jamb in the usual manner, opening outward and having its hinge-edge flush with the inner face of the jamb when opened. A bar, 3, is pivoted 3 5 with its eyed inner end, 4, upon a staple, 6, upon the inner side of the door, and the outer portion, 5, of this bar is bent at a right angle at a distance fromthe pivoted end equal to the distance from the staple to the hinge-edge of 0 the door. A hook or staple, 7, is secured upon the inner face of the hinge-jamb, and when the door is closed the hooked portion of the bar is hooked into the hook or staple, securing and locking the door. \rVhen the.door is opened, the hooked portion of the bar may be 4 5 placed around the hinge-edge of the door, bearing againstthe inner face of thejamb; and in this position the bent bar will secure the door and prevent it from being closed, the hooked end bearing harder against the jamb as the outer edge of the door is forced outward. It will thus be seen that the fastening will secure the door as well when closed as when opened, and the bar may be used conveniently as a handle for pushing the door 5 opener for drawing it shut, which will be of considerable convenience for opening and closing barn-doors to which access is had by a bridge, or where the ground is soft or muddy or otherwise impassible at the sides of the doorway.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination of a barn or similar door, a hingejamb having the door hinged to it and having its inner face flush with the hinge-edge of the opened door, a bar pivoted with its eyed inner end upon a staple upon the inside of the door, and having its outer portion bent at a right angle at a distance from the inner end equal to the distance from the staple to the hinge-edge, and a hook or staple upon the jamb, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as I my own I have hereunto affi Xed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLARENCE C. SPRINK LE. Witnesses:
SAMUEL MENDRENHALL, WILLIAM P. KEES.
