GLOBE FOR ELECTRIC LAMPS.
N0. 365,498. Patented June 28, 1887.
(fi 2% W m Q Q. time UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE L. ABBOTT, OF GORNING, NEW YORK eLoBE FOR ELECTRIC.LAMPS.1
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,498, dated June 28, 1887.
Application filed July 2, 1886. Serial No. 206,930. (No model.)
To all'whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. ABBOTT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Corning, in the county of? Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelopes for Electric Lamps, of 'which the following is a specification'.
My invention relates especially to casings, envelopes, or coverings for electric lamps, either incandescent or are, and has for its object the provision of a transparent, translucent, opaque, or colored envelope made of plain or colored or roughened or pressed or molded or cut material, so arranged as to be quickly placed in position around a lamp, leaving an opening at the extremity of the envelope through which the conductors and sup port for the lamp pass.
To attain the desired end, my invention consists, essentially, in an envelope or casing made of glass orequivalent material, the interior or exterior surface whereof is cut, molded, plain. pressed, blown, or roughed, said envelope being made in sections or segments, arranged for securing in place around a lamp by means of a screw-thread formed in the material of the segments engaging with r a screw-threaded ring, all of which will be hereinafter first fully described, and then pointed .out in the claims.
In the drawing the figure is an' elevation and partial section of an envelope made in accordance with my invention, the same being illustrated as inclosing an incandescent electric lamp, the bottom support of said lamp being removed.
Like letters of reference, wherever they occur, indicate corresponding'parts.
A is the body of the envelope cut into two or more segments, the exterior of said body being cut, plain, molded, transparent, transbeing screw-threaded at B and a screw-- threaded ring, D, passed thereover.
By my peculiar construction of envelope ditl'erent colors may be employed either for the entire envelope or for alternate segments;
the lamp is wholly coveredand hidden from View, and. the envelope may be quickly applied or removed, occasioning but little delay in'replacing a spent or broken lamp and obviating the unpleasant glare usual in naked lamps.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An envelope for electric lamps, formed in vertical segments, the exterior or interior surface thereof being plain, colored, transparent, translucent, opaque, pressed, molded, or cut, as set forth, said segments being provided with a thread or threads formed in the material of the segments, as shown, in combination with a screw-threaded ring, D, sub-- stantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with an electric lamp, of an envelope formed of vertical segments of glass or equivalent material, said segments be ing screw-threaded at one extremity, and a screw-threaded ring, substantially as and for the uses and purpose shown and described.
Signed at Corning, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, this 26th day of June,
' GEO. L. ABBOTT.
