NITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
HENRY R. GILLINGHAM, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
PACKING-CAN.
FEPECIPICATION fozming part of Letters Patent No. 365,064, dated June 21, 1887.
Application filed Apiil 1, 15187, Serial No. 233,317. tModel.)
To all whom, it 72mg concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY R. GILLING- HAM, of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Cans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in packing-cans; and it consists in the combination of a can having its upper edge turned inward, so as to form a flange, which both strengthens the can and forms a bearingsurface, a suitable packing which rests upon this flange, an inside cover or cap which is placed upon the top of the packing-ring and which is flanged around its outer edge, and the screw-threaded cover which screws upon the upper screw-threaded end of the can, all of which will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a cover for paint and packing cans of all kinds, which can be readily removed from and returned to position at the will of the operator, thereby enabling the can to be used over and over again, instead of having to be thrown away, as is the case with those cans where the cover is cut away when first opened.
Figure 1 is a vertical section ofa can, showing my invention complete. Fig. 2 is a detail view taken on a larger scale.
A represents a paint or packing can of any suitable size or construction and which is screw-threaded at its upper end, so as to receive the cover B, which is also made screwthreaded, as shown. The upper edge of this can is turned inward, so as to form a supporting-flange, B, which both serves to strengthen the upper portion of the can and to form a bearing for the packing-ring C, which rests thereon for the purpose of forming a tight joint and preventing leakage of the contents of the can. Placed upon the top of this pack ing and forming an inside cover for the can is the plate or cover D, which consists of a flat plate which has its outer edge formed into a bcaringflange, D, so as to fit snugly upon the top of the packing-rin This inside cover is recessed, as shown, at its center, and the width of this recess is just equal to the width between the flange B from side to side, and thus, when the plate or cover is in position upon the top of the can the vertical walls in the recess of the plate bear against the inside edge of the flange B, and thus strengthen and brace the can, so as to make it tight and strong at this point. \Vhen the cover is screwed down upon the top of the plate or inside cover, the packing-ring is tightly compressed, so as to form a tightjoint, and thus prevent all leakage at this point under any circumstances. In opening the can it is only necessary to unscrew the cover 13 and then lift off the inside cover and packingring, and after the can ha been used it can be closed up again andreused from time to time, as may be desired. The covers of the ordinary paintcans have to be cut away, and after the cans have been emptied they are unfit for further use on this account. Vherc the cover is made removable, as here shown, the can can be used over and over again.
Having thus described my invention, I claim The combination of the can A, having its outer edge, B, turned inwardly, so as to form a supporting-flange, the packing-ring O, which is placed upon the top of the flange, an inside cover, D, which is recessed at its center, so as to be centered in position between the inner edges of the flange B, and which rests at its outer edges upon the packing-ring C, and the screw-threaded cover D, which screws down upon the top of the can A, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
H. 1%. GILLINGHAM.
