f UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.ALB ERT T. SOHLIOHTING AND JULIUS SMITH, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNORS OF THREE-FIFTHS TO ADOLPH KERN, OF NEl/V YORK, N. Y.
FRUIT-JAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,703, dated March 18, 1890.
Application filed July 31, 1889. Serial No- 3l9,317. (N model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ALBERT T. Sonmcrrr- ING and JULIUS SMITH, both of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jars, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to provide a new and improved fruit-jar which is simple n construction, can readily be opened and closed, forms an absolutely tight seal, and the contents of which can under no circumstances be contaminated by coming in contact with metal.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and thenpointed out in the claim.
-In the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view of our improved fruit/jar, parts of the jar beingis made of porcelain or glass andis provided at the bottom of its edge with a downwardly and inwardly beveled annular shoulder E and with a raised rim F, having a flat annular top. The said inner cover is also provided with a handle-button G, projecting upward from thecenter of the top recess in said cover. The outer sheet-metal cover H is provided with ascrew-threaded flange J, that can be screwed on the threaded neck B of the jar.
. On the under side of the said sheet-metal outer cover H an annular downwardly-projecting bead K is formed, which can bear on the upper flat edge of the raised annular rim F of the inner cover D.
After the jar has been filled a packing-ring or gasket L, of india-rubber, is placed upon the beveled shoulder C of the jar, and the inner porcelain cover D is placed into the neck of the jar in such a manner that the when filling or emptying the jar, and thus all danger of contaminating the contents of the jar is avoided. The covers can be applied or removed very easily and rapidly, andthe gasket is not subjected .to any twisting strain While screwing on the metal. cover, as it is in fruit jarsinwhich the gasketis placed between the surface of the jar and a flange of said cover.
We are aware that interior porcelain or glass covers and exterior metal covers and packing-rings have been used on fruit-jars,
,and do not claim this, broadly, as our invention; but,
Having fully described our-invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination, with a fruit-jar having an externallyscrew-threaded neck and a downwardly and inwardly beveled interior annular shoulder at the bottom of the neck, of an interior porcelain cover provided with an annular bevel at the bottom of its edge and an upwardly-projectingrim having a flat top, a metal screw-cover adapted to be screwed on the neck of the jar and provided on its under side with .an annular projection which presses on the raised rim of the inner cover, and a gasket between the inner cover and jar, substantially as herein shown and described.v p
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we have signed our' names in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
.ALBERT T. SOHLIOHTING.
JULIUS SMITH. \Vitnesses:
