Description

No. 306,466. 7 'PATE'NTBI) DEG.5,1905.
' I. W. ENGLAND.
OAN.
APPLIOA TION FILED APR. 14.1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 14, 1905. Serial r5. 255,504.
' To all whom it may concern:
im roved means for readily removing detac able covers from cans and l1ke receptacles, and in carrying out my-invention I provide a can w1th a cover at 1ts open end aving a flange depending along the mouth of the can and with a hook or lever hung upon the edge of the can and projecting below the flange of the cover, whereby when the hook or lever is swung outwardly on the edge of the can as a fulcrum it will act upon the cover to lift the same from the can. When a ti ht closure is to be made between the edge of thecan and the cover, I provide a notch or recess in the edge of the can to feceive the end of the hook, whereby a packing disk or ring within the cover may bear upon the edge of the can withoutinterference by the hook.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, wherein Figure 1 is a partly-broken side view of a tin can embodylng my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side view looking from the left in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a side view of the edge of the can at its mouth.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the severaLviews, 1 indicates a can or similar receptacle which may generally be of any well-known construction, in the example shown the can being provided with a bead or enlargement 1 near its open end, forming a shoulder 1 and at 2 is a cover whose flange 2 fits over and bears firmly against the bead 1, so as to engage the shoulder 1*, whereby the cover is firmly and removably held uponthe can.
At 3 is a packing or disk of suitable mate- .rial placed between the edge of the can and the inner surface of the cover, whereby a tight closure may be made. I
At 4 is a hook or lever whose hooked end rests upon the edge of the can, and the handle part do ends between the shoulder 1 of the can an the flange 2 of the cover and extends below the latter in position to be grasped, which hook or lever may have an eye or handle at 4" for convenience in operating it. To apply the cover to the can, the hook or lever 4 is first hung upon the ed e of the can so that the handle part extends a ong the can, and then the cover is pressed over the end of the can and over the hook, whereby the hook is retained in position, and when the cover is to be removed the handle is pulled outwardly and in an u ward direction, and as its hooked end then lcrums on the edge of the can the handle part will engage the Patented Dec. 5, 1905.
flangeof the cover and pry or push the coven free from the can.
. When it is desired that the packing or disk 3 shall'make a close fit along the edge of the can without interference by the hook I provide a notch or recess, as at 1, in the edge of the can adapted to receive the bent part of the hook 4, the depth of the notch or recess 1 being such that the top of the hook may rest about flush with the edge of the can, so that the acking 3 may bear on the can edge and on t e hook to make a tight fit on the hook; but if a very close fit at the edge of the can is not required then the upper edge of the hook could be slightly below .the edge of the can, if desired. I
Having now described my invention, what I claim is 1. A receptacle provided with a cover having a flange depending along the receptacle, said receptacle having a notch at the edge of its 0 en end, and a lever having a bent portion ocated in'said notch and dependin between the receptacle and the flange o the cover, substantially as described.
2 A receptacle provided with a cover having a flange depending along the receptacle, said receptacle having a notch at the edge of its open end, a lever having a bent portion 10- cate in said notch and depending between the recepltgcle and the flange of the cover, and pac g within the cover bearing upon the edge of the can and lying over said bent portion of the lever, substantially as described.
