GILMAN R. COBURN, OF CHELSEA, llIASSAOHUSETTS.
MOLD FOR MOLDING HEELS FOR BOOTS OR SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,217, dated June 7, 1887.
Application filed October 9, i884. Renewed October 251, 1886. Serial No. 217,043. (No model.)
To aZZ whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, GILMAN It. COBURN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Mold for Molding Heels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that part of the manufacture of heels for boots or shoes in which the heel is molded to fit the sole of the boot 0r shoe; and the obj eet of my invention is to mold a heel in such a manner that when it is put onto the shoe and the front of it cut down it will leave the sole of the shoe smooth and unmarked. I attain this object by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is the molded heel, and Fig. 2 the mold.
onto the shoe is straight on top, when it is out down it will leave a mark upon the sole of the shoe corresponding in width to the difference in the length of the heel before and after it is cut down. To avoid making this mark it has been found necessary to bevel the fore part of the heel, either with a hand-knife or a machine, so that it will not bear upon the sole of the shoe.
It has been the custom in the manufacture of heels to use a convex mold for concaving the heel. The mold is placed-in a common molding machine or press, such as are well known to the trade. Theheels are placed one by one upon the mold and squeezed in the machine.
My mold is made like the one in common use, except that the mold B is made with a raised projection in front, I), so that when the heel A is molded the front part, a, will be squeezed harder than the body of the heel and beveled according to the shape of theprojection I), thus molding the heel and beveling its front portion at one operation, and avoiding the use of a hand-knife or machine. The mold B, with its raised projection b, is cast in a single piece. Its top surface is made so as to properly shape the heel and its bottom surface is made flat, so that it may sit firmly in the press, and it may be used with any ordinary heel-mold for shaping the edge of the heel.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy The mold B, having the fore part, I), raised, as shown, and for the purpose described.
\Vitness my hand.
