JEWELRY.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,610, dated April 19, 1887.

Be it known that I, JosErH BULOVA, oft-he city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Jewelry, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement upon Letters Patent No. 296,312, granted to me April 8, 1884.. In that patent I have described a new manner of fastening a letteror other ornament upon the stone of a finger-ring or other article of jewelry. The letter was provided with two pins that passed through perforations in the stone, and also through a perforated head or back plate beneath the stone. I propose in the present invention to economize the metal employed in the formation of the back plate. To this effect I employ an open frame and replace the back plate by a shoulder or byapair of ledges, all as will be hereinafter more fully described.

The invention consists in the features of im provement hereinafter more fully pointed out.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a cuifbutton or finger-ring providedwith my improvement. Fig. 2 is a back view of the same, but without the shank, to better expose the rear surface of the stone. Fig. 3 is a section on line 00 m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a front view of a locket provided with my improvement. Fig. 5 is an inner View of one of its jaws. Fig. 6 is a section on line 3 y, Fig. 5.

\Vith particular reference to Figs. 1, 3, the letter (t represents the head of a finger-ring or of a stud. This head consists of a square open frame having a shoulder, a upon which is set a stone, 1), having an inclined edge, I). a is a flange of frame a, which is pressed against the inclined edge I), and thus holds the stone in place. 0 is a letter or other ornament to be affixed to the outer surface of the stone at. This letter is provided with two screw-pins, d d, which are secured to the back of the letter and project at right angles therefrom. The pins (Z d are received by two tubular perforations made in thestone b, and having, preferably, countersunk ends. d d are a pair of nuts received by the countersunk perforations and surrounding the ends of screw-pins (1. Thus the nuts are placed flush with the inner surface of the stone.

With particular reference to Figs. 4, 6, the letter a represents the square open frame of one of the jaws of a locket, having the flange a, that bears against the inclined edge b of the stone I). This stone is not set upon a shoulder of the frame, as in Figs. 1 3, but it is held in place and against the flange a by two bars or ledges, e e, placed back of the stone b. These ledges rest at one end upon a shoulder, a and at the other end they rest upon a cross-bar, e, secured within the frame a by solder. The mode of attaching the ornament 0 to the stone 1) by the screw-pins d and countersunk nuts d is the same as described with reference to Figs. 1, 3.

In my old patent, No. 296,312, above referred to, the pins had to perform a double workviz., they had to hold the ornament to the stone and the stone to the ring. The latter function is now taken from the pins. Thus a structural difference is obtained that has the advantage of preventing loosening of to register-.-viz., the distance of the pins from each other, the distance of the holes in the stone,'and the distance of the holes in the head. By causing the nuts to bear against the stone and not against the head the number of these elements is reduced to two. Thus the difference in construetionviz., that the pins are relieved from duty of attaching the stone and that the nuts bear against the stone and not against the headproduces a simplification in the process of manufacture which is of importance to the trade. The bottom plate described in the old patent being dispensed with results in a considerable saving of material.- At the same time the rear face of the stone b remains exposed, which is desirable in some cases.

I claim as my invention- The combination, in an article of jewelry, of an open frame, a, with a stone, 1), secured within such open frame andhaving two perforations, and with the ornament 0, having screw-pins d 01, passing through such perforations and provided with nuts (2 d, substantially as specified.
