MEANS FOR SECURING DETACHABLE ORNAMENTS IN ARTICLES OF JEWELRY.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,365, dated July 11, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OHANN WILHELM LUD- WIG RoHDE, jeweler, a subject of Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 6 and 8 Oharterhouse Street, London, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented a certain new and Improved Means for Securing Detachable Ornaments in Articles of Jewelry, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 12,851, bearing date July 13, 1892,) of which the following is a specification.

This invention is more especially intended to be applied to stud-pins, ring-studs, brooch-bracelets, and like combination articles of jewelry wherein is employed a detachable and interchangeable ornament (such as a precious stone or cluster of precious stones) which is common to the set of articles and is secured to the article desired by a screw connection.

The object of my invention is to avoid the risk of losing such detachable ornaments by preventing the unscrewing orloosening of the said screw connection, which at present frequently occurs.

I will now proceed to describe my invention having reference to the accompanying drawings in which similar letters refer to corresponding parts in all the figures. sake of clearness I have represented the articles as considerably enlarged.

Figure 1 represents in sectional side elevation on an enlarged scale a scarf pin constructed according to my invention, having its detachable ornament locked in position. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but shows the locking blade or tongue opened out and the detachable ornament partly unscrewed. Fig. 3 is a back elevation of the scarf pin the detachable ornament being removed. Fig. e is a sectional side elevation on an enlarged scale of a stud constructed according to my invention. Fig. 5 is a similar view to Fig. 4 showing the locking blade or tongue opened out and the detachable ornament partly unscrewed. Fig. 6 is a back elevation of the stud. Fig. 7 is a sectional side elevation on an enlarged scale of a finger ring constructed according to my invention, the ornament being removed.

For the Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, A represents the detachable ornament and B is a scarf pin. The screwed stem at of the detachable ornament A engages with the correspondingly screwed socket b of the scarf pin Bin the usual manner. In order to prevent the detachable ornament A from becoming un screwed or loosened I provide a locking blade or tongue 0, pivoted at 61 within a suitable slot fin the scarf pin, and adapted to be engaged with and withdrawn from a slot or notch e formed in the screwed stem at of the detachable ornament.

In fixing the ornament A in position the locking blade or tongue 0 would first be opened out as shown in Figs. 2 and 5. The ornament would then be screwed home into the socket b and the slot or notch e in its stem brought into alignment with the slot f in which the locking blade or tongue 0 is pivoted. The locking blade 0 would then be pressed into the slot or notch e, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, and. thus effectually prevent the detachable ornament from becoming unscrewed or loosened.

In Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the same arrangement as above described is shown as applied to a stud B, and in Fig. 7 to a ring B g represents a convenient projection or head on the locking blade 0 for opening out the latter by the finger nail.

Although I have only illustrated by way of example the application of my invention to scarf pins, studs, and finger rings, it will read ily be seen that the same may be equally well applied to brooches, bracelets, and all other articles of jewelry wherein a detachable ornament is secured by a screw connection.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. In an article of jewelry having a detachable ornament secured thereto by a screw connection, the hereinbefore described means for preventing the unscrewing or loosening of such ornament, consisting of a springless pivoted locking blade or tongue on the article adapted to engage with a slot or notch in the ornament, substantially as described with reference to the drawings. Y

2. The combination with an article of jew elry having a detachable ornament secured thereto by a screw connection, and also having a slot or notch e in the stem of the ornament, of a springless locking blade or tongue 0 pivoted to the article and adapted to be engaged with and Withdrawn from the slot or notch e, substantially as and for the purpose described and illustrated in the drawings.
