MEANS FOR SECURING JEWELS 0R ORNAMENTS TO STUDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 12, 1909.
Patented June *7, 1910.
Serial No. 483,051.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR E. KAHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Securing Jewels or Ornaments to Studs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompany- .ng drawing.
This invention relates to means for securing ornaments to pins or studs, and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts presently to be described.
The object of the invention is to provide a construction whereby a jewel or ornament may be applied to a stlck pin, stud or button and when so applied will present a finished appearance resembling in that respect a permanent attachment.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown the invention as applied to a stick pin and also as applied to the shank of a button. It is however, to be understood that the specific illustrations are not employed for the purpose of limitations in so far as the invention as defined in the claim is concerned.
Figure l is a side elevation; Fig. 2 is a vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a modified form.
A designates the pin and B is the head part. This head is constructed conveniently in drum shape having an integrally closed end Z) and an inserted disk part I) held in position by the edges of the drum part bent slightly inward over the disk. The disk is provided centrally with a screw threaded stem 6 The jewel or ornament is designated at C and has a concaved inner face 0 of a diameter slightly greater than that of the head. Within this concaved portion is secured a head D of the threaded stem 6 which is designed to engage with the threaded aperture in the disk of the head.
Owing to the curvature of the side forming the concaved part of the jewel or ornament and its diameter relative to the diameter of the head, it will be observed that the edges of the head adjacent the securing disk will be forced into this depression slightly as the ornament or jewel is secured to the head by turning the same, thus the screw will be carried well into the threaded aperture in the head. The construction thus described while being applied conveniently to a pin, may be applied to a button stem of any desired form as shown in Fig. 3, at A.
It will be readily appreciated by reason of the particular construction above described that a detachable connection is formed between the ornament and the head and that the joint is so positioned as to be practically concealed, thus rendering the entire article as though it were finished with a permanent connection.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is An article of manufacture of the character described comprising a shank, a head on said shank provided with an approximately annular bearing on its face, a decorative member having a dished undersurface corresponding generally to the contour of the bearing edge on the head but somewhat larger in diameter at the entrance of the dished portion, and a connecting pin between the decorative member and the head securing them together with the bearing edge of the head in contact with the wall of the dished portion and within the dished portion so that both the pin and the overhanging portion of the decorative member resist breakage of the decorative member under lateral strain.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
