Description

April 21, 1931. w b ws 1,801,905
SEPARABLE FAS TENER Filed March 8. 1930 Patented Apr. 21, 1931 I UNiTED STATES PATENT orrics JOSEPH V. DEWS, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO SCOVILL MANUFAC- TURING COMPANY, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CON- N ECTICUT I Application filed March 8,
and cheapen the attachment of a snap-fas tener element to an ornamental top or cap.
A prior construction has included a top or cap of solid material, such as pearl, in the back of which is an undercut recess in which the snap-fastener element has been expanded to connect the two. It is difiicult and expensive to make this undercut recess.
The present invention presents a straight out recess in the top or cap and an exterior metal ring-shaped collet applied to the rim of the top or cap and underlying the back of the top or cap, in which is upset, collapsed or mushroomed the snap-fastener element,
which serves not only as such but also as the means for attaching the top or cap to an article, such as a glove, for use as I will proceed now to explain more fully and finally claim.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, in the several figures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the top or cap,
and Fig. 2 is a cross-section thereof. Fig.
3 is a bottom plan view of the collet, and
Fig. 4 is a cross-section thereof. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the assembled top or cap and the collet. Fig. 6 is a bottom plan View, and Fig. 7 an elevation of one 'form of snapfastener element, same being a resilient socket member. Fig. 8 is a sectional elevation showing the top or cap provided with the collet, the socket and a piece of material between these two parts, in position for setting. Fig. 9 is a sectional elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 8 as they appear in set condition.
The top or cap 1 may be of pearl or other material, natural or artificial, and its outer surface may be plain or ornamented. The back of the top or cap is provided with the straight-sided recess 2, instead of the old undercut recess. To the rim 3 of the top or cap, is affixed a ring-shaped collet 4, which extends beneath the top or cap and has an opening 5 in its bottom centered with the recess 2, the upper portion of the collet being closed down over the outside of the rim of the top SEPARABLE FASTENER 1930. Serial No. 434,36 i
or cap and thereby securely aflixed to its said toporjcap.
When the top or cap and the collet are assembled as shown in Figs. 5, 8 and 9, they are ready to be attached to or set upon an arti cle, represented by 6, Figs. 8 and 9, and they are attached or set by inserting the collapsible or mushrooming end of a snap-fastener element through a hole in the material 6 and the opening 5 of the collet and into the reces. 2 of the top or cap, with its flange against the outside of the material, and then by pressure upsetting such end against the inner face of the recess and the inner edge of the collet. as shown in Fig. 9. v
A resilient snap-fastener element is shown in Figs. 6 to 9 as appropriate for such use with the top or cap, and comprises the barrel 7 rising from a flange 8, the barrel being slitted longitudinally at 9 to render it collapsible and the flange being slitted transversely at 10, in line with the slits 9, to render it resilient for engaging a rigid or non-resilient head or stud 11, Fig. 9, mounted upon an opposed part of an article to which the top or cap is applied to close the opposed parts of the article.
The flange 8 may have the prick points 12 to enter the article to prevent turning thereon, as usual.
When the snap fastener socket crushes and spreads under setting pressure, the metal collet functions to engage such socket and hold it in place on the top or cap.
Variations in details of construction are permissible within the principle of the invention and the claims following.
What I claim is 1.A separable fastener, having a top or cap provided with'a straight-sided recess in" its back, a collet applied to the outside of the top or cap and closed downsecurely thereon and having an opening in its bottom, and a setting part cooperating with the recess in the cap and the opening in the collet. 1*
2. A separable fastener, having a top or cap provided with a straight-edged recess in its back, and a collet rigidly applied to the V Y rim of the top or cap and extending beneath it and having an opening arranged opposite to said recess, combined With an attaching element collapsed Within the collet and in the recess in the top or cap and having the collapsed portion engaging the inner side of the collet.
3. A separable fastener, having a top or cap provided with a straight-edged recess in its back, and a collet rigidly applied to the rim of the top or cap and extending beneath it and having an opening arranged opposite to said recess, combined with an attaching resilient snap-fastener socket collapsed within the collet and in the recess in the top or cap and having the collapsed portion engaging the inner side of the collet.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 7 day of March, A. D. 1930.
