UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY DREYFUS, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO LORSGH, DREYFUS & (30., OF SAME PLACE.
. BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 277,999, dated May 22, 1883.
' Application filed October 9,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY DREYFUS, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and use- 5 ful Improvement in Buttons; and I hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and
exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming. part of this specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in separable sleeve-buttons and other similar buttons worn asjewelry.
The invention consists in the combination, with the metal or other head of such a button, 1 of a stone cap provided on one side with a recess or chamber to receive the metal portion of the button, the stone cap thus formingthe face and sides of the head of the button, as will be more. fully set forth hereinafter.
Figure l is a perspective view of a separable button provided with my improved cap, forming the exterior of the button proper. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a button provided with my improved stone cap.
In the drawings, a is a cut stone cap or jewel. The various kinds of agate, blood-stone, and other stones used for buttons or similar articles, and the artificial imitations thereof, may be used for this purpose. The stone cap a forms the face of the button, and is provided on one side with a recess or chamber, d, of such depth that the flanges a a will project a little distancebelow the metal head 0 of the button to conceal said metal, and also prevent- 'itfrom coming in contact with the cufi'or collar. 1) is the post, and c the shoe, of the button.
The recess d is made of such shape and dimensions as will be required to receive the metal head 0 of the button, which varies with differ- 0 cut styles of buttons.
The flanges a of the stone cap may be provided with slits or notches 0, so that the cap may extend below the pushers; or said flanges may have sinall holes bored through them, and 5- the pushers be passed through these holes from the inside and retained in position by springs,
as is now customary where the flanges are formed of metal.
It will be seen, on examining Fig. 2 of the drawings, that the flanges a of the stone cap 0 a extend down beyond the metal head 0 and pushers, so that the inner surface or face of the button is formed by the stone. The object of this is to prevent the cuifor collar from being soiled or colored, which is always the case 5 when metal comes in contact with the same, but is not so soiled or colored by the contact of the stone. The cap a is secured by cement or in any other suitable manner to the buttonhead 0, and forms the whole visible the same.
I am aware that precious stones have been used for buttons, that such stones were usually secured in settings, and also that before my invention posts have been secured to precious stones by extending a portion of the shank into or through the button. All such as these .i do not claim, as they are old and well known. But in y improved cut-stone cap, provided with a recess or chamber to receive the metal portion of the button, difi'ers very materially from these, in that it is an article of manufacture in itself, which can be readily placed over any ordinary metal button and secured; thatit can be cut in any desired form independent of the form of the button, and may be ornamented by facets or otherwise; that it forms the entire visible portion of the button, and by its clean surface prevents the soiling of the linen.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letter Patent- In a separable button, the combination, with the head 0 of the button, of the recessed cutstone cap a, provided with slits or holes 0 e, constructed to receive the pushers, as de- 8 scribed.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
HENRY DREYFUS.
