FREDERICK OSCAR HARTER AND CHARLES ALBERT PARKER, OF ILION, N. Y.
TYPE-WRITER CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.360,016, dated March 29, 1887.
Application filed January 3, 1887. Serial No. 223,235. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FREDERICK Oscar: HARTER and CHARLES ALBERT PARKER, citi- Zens of the United States, residing at Ilion, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Type-Vriter Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in type-writer cabinets; and it consists in a certain novel construction and arrangement of parts, fully set forth hereinafter and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of our improved cabinet. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of same. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the case closed.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters denote corresponding parts in all the figures, A is the cabinet, made in the form of the ordinary officedesk, either with or without the drawers A at the sides, a portion, B, of the top 0 of which desk is adapted to act as a lid, and is hinged at the rear edge, as seen at D.
E is the swinging supportingplatform for the typewriter, the front or outer side of which platform is supported upon the crossrail 6 of the desk or cabinet when the latter is open, and the rear side of which platform is sustained by the cord G, which passes over a pulley, H, at the rear of the desk or cabinet, and is attached to the weight H, moving in a vertical weight box or compartment. The specific gravity of the weight is such as to counterbalance the other moving parts, and thus insure an easy movement thereof, as will be readily seen.
I is a bracket, secured to the upper side of the platform at one end thereof, having the gear-teeth on the upper edge, the general outline of the toothed upper edge being curved, as shown, with ,the front end projected down and a stop or enlarged tooth, I, at the rear end thereof.
Secured to the under side of the lid and adapted to mesh at all times with the teeth on the bracket I is a gear, K, made in the form of a segment.
XVhen the cabinet is closed, the platform E rests at the outer or front edge upon a dustexcluding strip, Lat the sides upon the inclined strips L and at the lower or rear edge upon the shelf L This arrangement excludes all dust from the interior of the case when closed. The front end of the said platform is guided by the dust-strip L, which, in raising the platform, serves to direct the front edge thereof to its position over the rail 0.
N is a cross-bar, which is designed as astop for the rear edge of the platform when it is in its raised position.
In order to raise the machine into position for operation without the inconvenience which might attend reaching up to raise the lid, we provide a lever, O, pivoted to the case at P and having a handle, 0. To the rear end of the lever is pivotally attached a link, Q, the other end of which link is secured to the platform E. Therefore, tobringthemachineintoposition for operation, grasp the handle 0 (which is within easy reach of the operator) and press down upon it. The force exerted (which need only be slight, as the counterbalancing weight H will assist the movement,) will raise the platform, the front of which will be guided by the strip L and the rear end by the guidepins and track. As the platform rises, the cog-teeth in the bracket 1, meshing with the teeth of the gear K, will cause the lid of the desk or cabinet to be raised. XVhen the said lid reaches a point slightly beyond the vertical line, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, the end of the segment K will bear against the stop I on the bracket I, and prevent further backward movement.
If it should prove inconvenient to have the lid B in the raised position shown while using the type-writer, it is only necessary to press slightly down upon the platform to disengage the gears, and then the lid may be laid entirely back, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
The same operation is necessary to re-cngage the gears.
To lower the machine, simply raise the handle O, and the platform will be lowered and drawn back and the lid 13 will return to its place, operated by means of the gears I K.
It is only necessary to have the gears on one side of the platform, as shown; but, if desired, they may beplaced on both sides. The lever 0 may be placed on either side or on both sides of the platform, although it is only necessary to be on one side, and preferably on the same side as the gears I K.
In the foregoing description we mention the dust-strips L and L and the shelf 1 and the cross-bar N, all of which features areincluded in our previous application, Serial No. 219,669, filed November 23, 1886. We therefore do not claim them as new herein, but include them in the present application to add to the general completeness of the present cabinet.
Another advantage is that the lid may be detached and laid back out of theway of light; or it may be provided with a clip or some similar device and used in the ordinary or elevated position as a support for papers, 850., to be copied.
We are aware that it is old to construct a case or cabinet in which a counterbalanced platform for supporting the type-writer is employed and a hinged lid connected by the pivoted links to the platform; but such is not our invention, and forms no part of our claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the Uni-ted States, is-
1. In combination with the lid B of the case or cabinet, the platform E, said platform and lid having intermeshing gears, whereby the platform and lid are raised simultaneously and the lid may be disengaged from the platform and thrown back entirely out of the way at will, as set forth.
2. In combination with the lid B of the desk or cabinet A, said lid having the gear K, the platform E, having the gear I, adapted to engage with the gear K of the lid, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with the case or cabinet and supporting counterbalanced platform E, the lever O, pivoted to the case or cabinet and provided with a link, Q, connected to the platform, as set forth.
4. In a cabinet or case for type-writers, the supporting-platform E, having the gear I, and the lid B, having gear K to mesh with the gear I, combined with the lever 0, connecting with the platform to raise the same, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
5. In a cabinet for type-writers, the platform E, having gear I, secured thereon and formed with the stop I, combined with the lid B, having the toothed segment K to mesh with the gear I, and held from falling back by the said stop I, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
6. In a cabinet, the platform E, having gear I'and counterbalancing device H, combined with the lever O to operate said platform, and the lid B, provided with gear K, adapted to mesh with the gear I and raise the said lid by the action of the platform E, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as ourown we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of twowitnesses.
