SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,625, dated March 22, 1887.

zen of the United States, residing at Milford, in

the county of Dickinson and'State of Iowa,have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attachments for Stereotype-Blocks, of which the following is a Specification.

The object of my invention is to facilitate the accurate leveling of stereotyped plates in forms of printingtype; and to this end my invention consists in certain peculiar and novel features of construction and arrangement, as hereinafter described and claimed.

In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which.

In leveling forms of type-matter containing stereotyped plates great difficulty is experienced in bringing said plates to a properlevel with the type, owing to the greater area ofsaid plates, and also to the swelling of the wooden backingblocks, due to moisture from the imposingstones. As will be seen from the ensuing description, I entirely avoid both of these,

defects, and not only preserve the blocks from moisture, but render the leveling operation rapid and easy.

' In the saiddrawings, A designates a stereotyped plate, and B the wooden backing-block thereof, said plate being secured to the face of the block in any suitable or preferred manner.

0 designates a number of screws, which are inserted into the back or under side of the block B, said screws having the usual threaded stems and cross-nicked heads,c.

The arrangement of the screws 0 is such that when forced inward as far as permitted their heads 0 shall project outward beyond the under side of the block sufticiently to raise the latter up off of the imposing-stone, and thus prevent the block from coming into contact with the moisture thereon. Thus all warping and swelling of the block is prevented, and the stereotyped plate is kept level. In order to level the plate and block to accord with the type, it is only necessary to turn the screws 0 one way or the other, so as to cause them to extend more or less beyond the block, and this may be readily done by using the ordinary printers composing-rule, so that no separate implement is required.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The printing-block comprising the plate A, the backing or block PB, secured thereto, and the adj ustingscrews O, extending in threaded openings in the block B and having their heads projecting beyond the lower side of the block, whereby the latter will be raised above the plane. of the under side of the form, and whereby the block may be vertically adjusted in the form, substantially as described.
