PRINTERS CHASE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,662, dated February 20, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN M. BLANCHARD, of the city and county of St. Louis and State ot' Missouri, have invented a new Adjustable Printers Chase; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l ot' the annexed drawings represents a plan ot the improved chase when all its parts are put together in working order. Fig. 2 is an elevation of one of the side pieces alone.
The object of this invention is to produce a chase that printers can readily adjust to any required size of job matter that may be required in any country oflice or other place where a large number ot' chases ot'dit'terent sizes would be both troublesome and expensive.
In addition to the improvement of the chase so as to require a lesser number of them, another advantage arises in the mode of securing the matter in them, which is done without the usual number ot quoins, which the old method requires, the several bars of the chase being locked up on the outside.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my chase, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I take four straight metallic bars, A, one end of which, A', is made thicker than the rest of the bar, so as to allow the recess b to be made in the thick end part ot' a depth equal to the thickness of the rest of the bar. The width of the recess b should be more than the width of the bar, so that when the latter is laid in one ot' the recesses it can be moved easily backward or forward, and will readily admit of the key B being driven in alongside ot' it, as shown in the drawings. A groove should becut in the outer edge of each of the pieces A for the reception of the wedge or key B, so that when the key is driven in the bar cannot rise up out ot the recess.
In lieu of using the key B, a hole may be made in the outer end of the thickened part ot' the bar parallel with the axis ot' 'the bar, and a set-screw, C, fitted therein.
After the chase has been adjusted to the form the set-screws may be screwed up tight, and in this case the keys B will be dispensed with, as the screws will be all that'will be needed to fasten the chase onto the form.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- I A printers chase formed of four straight bars, A, fitted together so they may be adjusted to any size of form required without the use of quoins, substantially as set forth.
ALLEN M. BLANCHARD.
