Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OHAUNOEY W. AMES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRINTERS QUOINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,351, dated May 27, 1873; application filed August 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, CHAUNGEY W. AMEs, of the city of New York and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Quoins, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a quoin having two side plates, with wedges between the same, the latter being operated by means of a right and left hand screw.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top view of my improved quoin. Fig. 2 is a view of the same after the wedges have been driven apart so as to move the side plates wider apart. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of the quoin.
In the construction of my improved quoin the two side plates A A are beveled on the inside to embrace the two wedges B B, as
seen in Figs. 1 and 2. The wedges are connected by a right and left hand screw, 0, having a nut, D, in the middle for turning the screw, and thus moving the wedges. A lever or rod is put into the holes in nut D for the purpose of operating the nut and screw. The side plates A have small projections a to keep the nut and plates in place and to serve as a hearing when the screw is turned to move the wedges.
When the quoin is to be used the wedges are brought home upon the nut, as seen in Fig. 1, and sufficient furniture is used to pack the quoin closely when inserted. Then, by turning the screw 0, the wedges are driven apart, as seen in Fig. 2, thus pressing upon the furniture and closely wedging up and holding the type or page.
For convenience in handling, or for holding the pieces together, theplates A and wedges B may be connected by means of a d0vetailed groove and tongue, or by other means; also, the nut D may be operated by a ratchet and lever if desired.
Having thus described my quoin, I claim- The side plates A A, in combination with the wedges B B and the right and left hand screw and nut D, substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
l ,(J. AMES.
