Description

A. SHE'DLOGK.
LOCK'UP FOR PRINTERS USE. No.172,3%'7. Patented Jan.18,18'76.

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED SHEDLOOK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT lN LOCK-UPS FOR PRINTERS USE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 72,347, dated January 18, 1876; application filed May 19, ms.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED SHEDLooK, of the city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented acertain Improved Lock-Up for Printers Use, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows the improved lock-up as applied to bold type in a chase. Fig. 2 is an end view of the lock-up. Fig. 3 is a View of the key for operating it.
It consists of a pair of toggle'joints, a a, drawn together by a right and. left hand threaded screw, b. The outer ends of the tog gle-join ts a a work in hearings in and are pivoted to two similar bars, 0 and o, and the inner ends of them are pivoted to the two nuts cl and d, which are tapped out to correspond to the threads on the double-screw shaft 1). The ends b b of the screw 1) are squared, so as to fit the square hole in the crank-handle e, by which the screw is turned until the bars 0 and o are at such a distance apart as just to go into the space it is desired to use the lock-up in; then the part 6 of the crank e is used to turn the screw b by inserting it into the holes 1) b provided therefor in the enlarged central portion of the screw b, thus enablin g considerable power to be applied to the screw to draw the nuts d and d together,
thereby forcing the bars 0 and c apart-one against the side of the chasef, and the other against the type g--with the required force to hold the type firmly within the chase. The space at the foot of the type 9 is shown filled in with furniture and wedges; but a small lock-up may be used instead of them. The lock-up may also be used to hold forms on printing-presses.
I am aware that toggle-joints operated by a double threaded screw-shaft have been used for applying pressure; but in my application of them combined with two similar bars, with no device for keeping the bars parallel, allows the bars o adjust themselves to the type and side of the chase if the type and side of the chase should not be parallel, thus doing away with the necessity of usingfurniture or wedges.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a lock-up for printers use, the combination of the toggle-j0ints a a and double screw-shaft b with the bars 0 and 0, constructed and operating substantially as hereinbet'ore set forth.
