NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 644,548, dated February 27, 1900.
Application filed August 3,1 8 9 9- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SMITH FERRIS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lock- Nuts, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is an end View. Fig. 2 is a side View. Fig. 3 is a view in longitudinal section on the plane denoted by the dotted line as m of Fig. 1.
The object of the improvement is the production of a lock-nut having features of novelty and advantage.
In the accompanying drawings the letter aw denotes a screw-threaded bolt. Its end is shaped polygonally, as well seen in Fig. 1. In one side of this polygonal part of the bolt there is a mortise Ct.
The letter b denotes an ordinary nut carried on a threaded bolt.
The letter 0 denotes a cap fitting interiorly to the polygonal sides of the nut. It bears Serial No- 725,982. (No model.)
integrally the boss 0, which fits interiorly to the polygonal surfaces of the screw-threaded bolt. This nut-cap has the wedge-bottomed key-slot c.
The letter d denotes a wedgeshaped key. In the use of this device it is necessary to turn the nut into a position which will allow the cap to fit thereon and also by its boss fit upon and to the polygonal surfaces of the bolt. Then the key may be driven home, and, if desired, the small end of the key may be bent to one side, locking the key in its place.
I claim as my improvement In combination; the screw-threaded bolt provided with the polygonal surfaces and with the key-mortise; the nut; the nut-cap provided with the boss fitting interiorly to the polygonal surfaces of the bolt and also provided with the wedge-bottomed key-slot; and the wedge-shaped key; all substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
