HAM E-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,422, dated March 15, 1887.
Application iilcl October 19, 1886.
To @ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. BEANDEs, of Corydon, in the county of Henderson and State of Kentucky, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Hame-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of hamefasteners in which a lever is employed to cffect and tighten the fastener, and a springretaining device is used to retain the said lever; and the invention consists in certain conhaines in relative position and the improved fastener applied thereto; Fig. 2, an enlarged view of one of the haines in partial section, and Fig. 3 a detail perspective of the retaining device with the parts separated.
The hames A and B are of any approved construction, the end of' the part A carrying a swivel-link, C, to which is attached a short chain, D, forming a part of the fastener. The hame B is provided withan iron strap, Fi, such as is ordinarily employed with hames, and to an eye formed by the turn of the said strap as it is passed around the lower end of the hame is secured a link, F, to which is pivoted a lever, G. The lever is so bent that When-passed through a link in the chain D and moved on its pivot until laid against the side of the hanne the link will be held in the bend of the lever, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, thus securing the lower ends of the haines together, and at the same time straining the chain so as to bring the hames as closely together as possible. The outer edge of the hame B is provided with a transverse groove or recess, H, and a longitudinal channel or groove, I, leading into the the groove H, and
fdeeper than the said groove H.
Within the groove H is an eye or sleeve, K, embracing and extending beyond the strap E, and carrying an arm or bar, L, at the free end of which is a short projection or finger,
Serial No. 216,671. (No model.)
such devices are liable to be accidentally caused to release the lever.
I am also aware that spring devices have been used; but their reliability isuncertain, as the contact surfaces are not sufficient- Such devices are obviously different in construction from my fastener, which, having but a small surface of the sleeve exposed, reduces the liability of accidental displacement to a minimum.
Without limiting myself to the precise construction and arrangement of partsv shown, I claim- 1. The combination, with the hame A, having the chain D, of the llame B, having the pivoted lever G mounted upon its end, and a confining spring-actuated loop, K, having an arm which lies in a groove of the hame beneath the strap E, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the hame A, havingthe chainD, of the hame B, having the link F, the pivoted lever G, the loop K, having arm L, and the spring N, bearing upon the part M, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the hame A, having the chain D, of the hame B, havinglink F, and provided with the transverse groove H and longitudinal slot I, the pivoted lever G, loop K, lying partly within groove H, and having the armL lying in slot I, and the spring N, bearing against the endM of arm L, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence oftwo witnesses.
HENRY H. BRANDES.
