My present invention has relation to the kind of butter-tubs described in Letters Patent of the United States No. 309,969, issued tov me December 30, 188i, and its principal obzo ject is to render the exclusion of air in such butter-tub more perfect by a better attachment of the lid to the tub.

In making my improved butter-tub I take, preferably, a tub of the construction and general shape of the one described in my patent above referred to. To make the exclusion of air from the tub, which has a deteriorating effeet on the butter contained therein, more perfect and secure, I employ a padding or 0 cushion of cotton, ielt, cloth, or other suitable material interposed between the upper rim of the butter-tub and the lid. The top is provided with a free edge, which is bent into a groove or channel adapted to fit in use snugly 3 5 over the upper rim of the tub, as will be seen froma reference to the drawings. rim or flange. This rim or flange, as will be seen from a reference to the drawings, stands practically at right angles to the side of the tub. It is provided at intervals around the tub with slots or holes,through which tongues like those described in my other patent are to be inserted. These tongues are preferably riveted to the tub with one riveteach, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so that they can be turned down out of the way when the lid is off and the tub not in use. When the tongues are inserted in the slots they are preferably bent outward and downward, though they may be bent over the top of the lid, if desired, thus drawing the lid securely down in place, pressing the packing against the upper rim of the tub, and holding and securing the lid in posit-ion until it is desired to be taken on to remove the contents of the tub. This is done by simply straightening the tongues, so that they will slip out of the slots as the lid is raised.

By bringing the edge of the lid over the top of the tuband down and turning it out in a flange, as above described, the slots may be placed in such outwardly-extending flange in stead of in the groove or channel at the top of the tub, as shown and described in my other patent! This enables me to place the packing or cushion in such groove or channel immediately on the upper rim of the tub, which I cannot do satisfactorily and securely where the slots are made in such groove or channel, as in my other patent.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a buttertub, the combination, with a pail or tub provided with tongues, of a cover having its free edge bent into a groove or channel fitting over the rim of the tub, and then turned outward into a flange or projection providedpvith slots, through which the tongues pass in use, substantially as described.

2. In a butter-tub, the combination, with a pail or tub provided with tongues riveted thereto with one rivet, of a coverhaving its free edge bent into a groove or channel fitting over the rim of the tub, and then turned outward into a flange or projection provided with slots, through which the tongues pass in use, tongues pass in use, and a packing interposed substantially as described. in the groove or channel between the rim and 10 3.
