UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICEe CHARLES LAWRENCE LINCOLN EMERY, OF BIDDEFORD, MAINE.
INVALID-BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,586, dated February 15, 1887.
Application tiled .T une '7, 1886. Serial No. 204,297. (No model.)
.To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES LAWRENCE LINCOLN EMERY, of Biddeford, in the county of York, of the State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Invalid-Bed steads; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification, arid represented in the accompanying drawings, of which i `.Figure 1 is a top view, Fig. 2 afront elevation, Fig. 3 a rear end elevation, and Fig. 4 a longitudinal median section, of a bedstead containing my invention, the nature of which is dened in the claims hereinafter presented. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section'ofthe commode, which, in Figs. 1 and 2, is represented as drawn out or projecting outwardly from aswell as underneath the bedstead, it being in Fig. 1 shown in dotted lines as entirely underneath the bedstead. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of the separable lever and its lip Z and rack, to be explained. Fig. 7 is a section of such lever 'aken on a plane at right angles with that of This bedstead, like various others, has wit-hin its rear part a frame or grid, pivoted at its in! ner corners to the sides of the bedstead, to enable it (the said frame or grid) to be turned from a horizontal up into an inclined position relatively to the series of slats in front of it. The said frame or'grid rests upon two cams iixed upon a rock-shaft extending across the bedstead and journaled in suitable bearings. At one end of the shaft there is fixed to it an arm extending upward from it, and having on its inner edge a lip to engage with a curved rack fastened to the outer surface of one side of the bedstead. This arm forms the lower part of a separable lever, and is socketed in its upper end to receive the upper part, which, at its foot, fits into the socket. Furthermore, there is under the bedstead a commode, which, at its outer rear corner, is pivoted to .the bedstead, so as to be capable of being turned from underneath it outwardly, to project beyond it far enough to admit of it being used or sat upon by a person.
In the drawings, the bedstead is represented at A, its series of mattress-supporting slats at c a a, Ste., the movable frame at B, the cams on which such frame rests at G C, their shaft at D, its socketed arm at E, and its handle or separable part at F, and the curved rack at G. The lip of the arm E is'shown at Z.
The commode is represented at H, it being a rectangular box, having a door, b, at one end and a round hole, c, in the top, there be ing within the box a vessel or chamber-pot, d.
By means of the separable lever the frame .B may be raised to an obtuse angle with ref erence to the plane of the series of slats, in order for a mattress when resting on such frame and slats to have its rear portion similarly inn clined.
By having the lever in two parts the removable portion may be withdrawn from the lower one orused with it, as occasion may require. Ihe natural or inherent elasticity of the socketed arm E enables it, by means of the separable part F, to be sprung either into or out of connection with the rack.
I do not claim, broadly, a bedstead having an inclinable frame, as described, in rear of its slats, and having mechanism for inclining such frame; nor do I claim,A broadly, a cabinet combined with and arranged underneath a bedstead.
I am aware of United States Patents Nos. 117,440 and 202,936, which show invalid-bedsteads the bottoms of which have a hinged section and cams or arms to lift such section.
1. The combination, with the lbedstead A, its inclinable frame B, the shaft D, and cams C C, arranged under such frame, of the curved rack G, applied to one side of the bedstead, and of the separable lever iixed to the shaft and consisting of the arm E, socketed as represented, and having the lip to engage with the rack, and of the removable part F, tenoned to enter the socket of such part, all being substantially as represented.
2. The combination, with the bedstead, of the commode arranged under it, the said commode consisting of the cabinet to inclose the vessel and which rests upon the iloor and is pivoted to such bedstead, so as to admit of such commode being turned out from underneath the bedstead, as and for use as specified.
CHARLES LAWRENCE LINCOLN EMERY.
