PICK.
Patented Jan. 18, 1887;
m Wu E I N T m UNITED STATES PATENT O rrice.
ANDREW 'I. MOATS, OF PLEASANTVILLE, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JACOB R. GLINE, OF SAME PLACE.
PICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 356,412, dated January 18, 1887.
Application filed June 3, 1886. Serial N0.-204,074.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW T. Moms, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pleasantville, in the county of Marion 5 and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
15 My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in picks, the object of the same being to provide an improved means for attaching the pick to the socket, which is secured to the handle so that the same can be 20 readily attached and detached therefrom; and
to this end my invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pick constructed in accordance with my improvement; and Fig. 2 is a side View,
partly in section.
,0 A refers to the handle of the pick, which is enlarged at its upper end, as shown at a. To the enlarged portion of the handle a metallic socket, B, is secured by means of a rivet, b, which passes through depending portions 0 of ,5 the socket, which embrace the upper sides of the end of the handle. The metallic socketB has a straight upper edge, and is provided with upwardly-projecting portions 0 O, which extend above the plane of the same, so as to 0 enter suitable recesses, D, in the pick-blade E.
(No model.)
The pick-blade E is provided centrally with a perforation, through which passes a bolt, F, said bolt entering the female screw G in the socket. Adjacent to the recess through which the bolt passes the upper portion or edge of the pick- 5 blade is cut away, so as to provide a recessed portion, H, within which will lie'the head of the bolt, so that said bolt will not project above the body portion or central portion of the pick. The bolt is attached to the socket by a wrench, said wrenchbeing similar in construction to an ordinary bed-wrench.
By means of the device hereinbefore de scribed the pick-blade can be readily attached and detached, and will secure the pick-blade firmly in place.
I claim 1. The combination, in a pick, of, a handle provided at its end with a metallic socket having upwardly-projecting nibs D D and a central screw-threaded recess, G, with apick-blade provided on its under side with recesses within which the projecting nibs lie, and a central perforation through which passes the securingbolt, substantially as shown, and for the pur- 55 pose set forth. I Y
2. Thecombination, in a pick, of a handle provided with a metallic socket having upwardly projecting nibs D D and a central screw-threaded recess, with the pick-blade E, having recesses O O, and a recess, H, adjacent to the openingin the pick-blade through which the headed securing-bolt F passes, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 7 5 presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW T. MOATS. Witnesses:
