Description

W. E. FROST.
NAIL. I APPLIGATIOE TILED MAR. 5. 1911 1,012,622, Patented Mail-6,1911.
B dud d IN VEN TOR WIT "155355 I I 047 E. 7 7
WALTER E. FROST, OF LEWISTON, MAINE.
' NAIL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
I Application filed March 8, 1911. Serial No. 613,051.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it. known that I, \VALI'ER E. a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewiston, -in the county of Androscoggin and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Nails, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to nails;
and it consists in the peculiar and advantageous nail, hereinafter described and claimed, designed more especially for fastening clapboards and other boards.
In the drawings which are hereby made a part hereof: Figure l is a side elevation of my novel nail. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the nailz'. e., a view taken at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged crosssection taken in the plane of the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 looking downward. Fig. 4.- is a similar'view taken on the line H of Fig. 2, looking downward.
Similar lettersof reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings. 1
My novel nail is provided with the usual or any other approved head A, and its shank B when viewed in side elevation, Fig.
1, is of general diamond shape. In other words, the said shank when viewed in side elevation is tapered from an intermediate point- 11, located adjacent its middle, to its head end Z. and. point end 0, this formation being materially advantageous, inasmuch as it renders easy the drawing of the nail when such operation is necessary, and at the same time lends increased strength to the nail at and adjacent the point where the nail is shouldered as will now be described. The shoulders C are provided on opposite sides of the shank B at the point or in the same horizontal plane as the point a, and from the said shoulders C to the head A the shank B is of approximatel) even thickness throughout when viewed in edge elevation, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 2. From the said shoulders C downward the shank B when viewed in edge elevation is approximately of even thickness throughout. ll. wlll be noticed by comparison of F igs. 1, 'J
and 4, however, that between its edge por tions a the lower section of the shank B is beveled, as indicated by J, so that in crosssection said lower portion is generally diamond-shaped and is therefore adapted to be driven into a clapboard or other board with out liability of the same being split. The shoulders C tend to prevent casual l ,--.:aenn;;;
or displacement of the nail when driven in a board, and this without preventing ti easywlthdrawal of the nail hereinbefore r:
'ferred to.
Having described my invention, what i claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patout, is:
l. A nail comprising a head and a shank; the said shank being provided on its opposite sides, at an intermediate point of its length, with shoulders and being of a reduced thickness from said shoulders to its head end and being also tapered in width from the shoulder point to its head end and point end, whereby when viewed in side elevation the shank is of general diamondshape.
2. A nail comprising ahead and a shank; the said shank being provided on its opposite sides, at anintermediate point of its length, with shoulders and being of a reduced lirlCl'lesS from said shoulders to its head end and being also tapered in width from the shoulder point to its head end and point end, whereby when viewed in side elevation the shank is of general diamondshape, and being further provided between the edge p'ortions of the partintermediate the shoulders andthe point end with bevels.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
