STBAGHT-EDGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented lDec. 5, 1916.
Application led May 5, 1916. Serial No. 95,568.
To all zo/tom t may concern 13e it known that l, DOTT d. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and improved Straight-Edge, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
lr/ly invention has tor its object to provide a straight edge particularly well adapted Jfor use by paper hangers, and having means by which the edge may be straightened shouldL the wood of which the body of the straight edge is manufactured swell or warp.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specilioation, in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters denote similar parts in al-l the views, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating partsl or' a straight edge manufactured in accordance with my improvement; Fig. 2 is a view illustrating the edge or the straight edgeg Fig. is an inverted plan view of the straight edge; Fig. lisa transverse sectional 'view on the line d-l of Fig. 1; and Fig.
5 is a sectional view similar' to that illustrated in Fig. il, but showing how the depending portion oil the angle member may be brought into engagement with the bottom plate secured to the body or' the straight edge.
ly referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the straight edge is provided with a body 10, which is usually manufactured of wood, and which is provided with a lon* gitudinal groove 11, this groove 11 together with a horizontal portion 12 of an angle member 13 forming a guide or track for the trimmer, in a manner well understood in the art. rlhe edge 111 of the body 10 is beveled, as illustrated in Figs. Ll and of the drawings, so that, while a depending portion 15 of the angle member 13 may engage the top of the body 12, the body of the said depending portion 15 will be disposed at a distance from the said body 10. A bottom plate 16 is provided, and is secured to the body 1() by screws 17, this bottom plate 16 projecting beyond the body at 18, where it is normally engaged by the bottom of the depending portion of the angle member 13,
may be readily corrected by turning screws 19 which project through openings 20 in the depending portion 15 of the angle member 13, these screws entering the body 10 and serving to bring the body of the depending portion 15 in contact with the edge of the projecting portion 18 of the bottom plate 16, thereby making certain that the edge 12a of the horizontal portion 12 of the angle member 13 will be disposed parallel with the edge of the projecting portion 18 of the bottom plate 16. rllhe bottom perfectly straight steel.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. ln a straight edge, a body having an edge, a bottom plate secured to the bottom of the body adjacent the edge thereof and having an edge projecting beyond the said edge oi the body, an angle member disposed at the top and at the said edge of the body and normally engaging the said edge of the bottom plate, and means for pressing the angle member against the bottom plate.
2. ln a -straight edge, a body having an edge, an angle member having a portion disposed at the top of the body adjacent the said edge and with its other portion eX- tending downwardly and engaging the top of the body and spaced from the bottom of the body, a bottom plate secured to the bottom of the body with an edge extending beyond the said edge of the body and substantially to the second mentioned portion of the angle member, and means for pressing the second mentioned portion of the angle member against the said edge of the bottom plate.
8. In a straight edge, a body having a beveled edge, an angle member having a portion disposed against one face of the body adjacent the acute angle formed by the beveled edge and with its other portion eX- tending downwardly adjacent the beveled edge, a bottom plate secured to the other tace of the body and extending beyond the plate 1G is a piece of i obtusev angle-formed 'bythe-beveled edge,
'and means for' pressing the second'men- Y tioned portion ot' they :angle member against Y the projecting portion of the bottom plate.
4. In astraight edge, a body having-an edge, a bottom plate secured to the bottom l 'ofgth'e body adjacent the edge thereof. and
having an edge projecting beyond the said anglev member againsty the 'bottom' plate,
' there Ybein'gva longitudinal groove in the tOD 0f the'body from oneY side'of which an .if 'edge of the anglelmember extends.
5. ln-arstraightedge', a body having an edgefan angle member having a portion Y disposed' atthe ftop "iof, vthe body adjacent thesaidedge andYWith'its other portion extendingv downwardly yand spaced from the Vbottom of the body at the said edge, a
y bottom plate secured to the bottom ot' the body andWith-'an'edge extending beyond the 'sail'dedge :of the: body and substantially to the second mentioned portion of the angle member, and means for pressing the second mentioned portion of the angle member against the said edge of the bottom plate,
there being a longitudinal groove in the top of the body from one side of which the edge of the first portion of the angle member extends.
6. In a straight edge, a body having a beveled edge, an angle member having a 5:
portion disposed against one face of the body adjacent the acute angle formed by the beveled edge-and with its other portion extending downwardly adjacent the beveled edge, i bottom plate secured to the other i DOTT J. MORGAN.
