flpeeiflcatlon 0! Letters Patent. Patented June 13, 1911.
Application filed. January 18, 1911. Serial No. 603,257.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. PEMBER- TON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Tooth for Excavating-Buckets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in teeth for excavating buckets, and it has for its object to provide one having a detachable point, so secured to the body of the tooth that it may bereversed when desired. in practice the points of these teeth usually become worn on the lower cutting surface, and it is my purpose to provide a tooth with a reversible point so that great additional wear may be obtained. Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following complete specification, in which the preferred form of my invention is described.
1n the rawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a bucket provided with my improved tooth; Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional View showing my improved tooth; Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 2; Fig. i is a perspective view showing the point of the tooth member and Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the shank of the tooth member.
By referring to the'drawings it will be seen that a shank member 5 is provided, having a slot 6, in which the edge of the bottom 7 of the bucket8 is normally disposed. There are rivet orifices 9 in the shank 5 by which means the shank may be riveted to the bottom portion 7 of the bucket. The forward end of the shank member 5 is provided with two projections 10, these projections being spaced apart at the sides of the shank memher. The upper and lower edges of the projections 10 are connected together by members 11, the upper member 11 extending above the upper plane of the projections 10, and the lowermember 11 extendingbelow the lower plane of the projections. An
elongated recess 13 is connected with the opening 12 between the projections 10, and a rivet orifice 1 1 extends through the shank member 5, and connects with the elongated recess 13. The point member 15 has a tongue 16, which is adapted to be disposed I in the opening 12 between the projections 10,
and to extend in the elongated recess 13, there being a rivet opening 17 in the terminal 16 Wl'llCh is normally disposed in alinement. with the openingl l. The upper and lower members of the point member 15 are continued to form flanges 18, which are normally disposed against the upper and lower portions of the projections 10, there being recesses 19 in the flanges 18 for receiving the members 11. Lateral openings 20 are made in the point members 15, which are disposed slightly in advance of the ends of the projections 10, when the point member 15 is secured to the shank member 5, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
In using the invention the point member is disposed with its tongue 16 in the elongated reeess 13, a rivet 21 being provided which extends through the opening 14 and the opening 17 to hold the point member firmly in place. When the point member 15 is disposed in place it will be seen that it will be rigid on the shank member 5, since not only will the tongue 16 serve to so hold it, but the flanges 18 with their recesses 19 Wlll engage the upper and lower portions of the shank member to prevent any ossible displacement. But not only will the point member 15 be held rigidly on the shank member 5, by the features described, but it will be seen that when the rivet 21 is withdrawn, a pin may be inserted in the openings 20, and pried against the ends of the projections 10, by which means the point member 15 may be freed from the shank member 5'. When this has been done, the point member 15 may be reversed, and may again be secured to the shank member 5 spaced apart, a tooth member having a pro- 1 j'e'ction normally disposed between the sides of the first-mentioned projections, and flanges on the tooth member disposed against opposite edges of the said first-mentioned projections, there being an opening in a side of the tooth member in which a pin may the second-mentioned members.
3. In a tooth for excavating buckets a member having two projections spaced apart, members connecting opposite edges of the projections and extending therebeyond, a tooth member having a tongue disposed between the projections, flanges disposed against opposite edges of the projections, there being recesses for receiving the second-mentioned members, there being an opening in a side of the tooth member in which a pin may be disposed for engaging one of the projections for prying the tooth member from the first-mentioned member.
4. In a tooth for excavating buckets a member having two projections spaced apart, members connecting opposite edges of the projections and extending therebeyond, there being a recess in the member connected with the opening between the flanges, and an opening extending to the re-v cess, a tooth member having a tongue disposed between the project-ions and extendof the projections and extending therebeyond, there being a recess in the member connected with the opening between the flanges, and an opening in the member extending to the recess, a tooth member having a tongue disposed between the projections and extending in the recess, there being an opening in the tongue normally disposed in alinement with the first-mentioned opening, flanges on the tooth member di'sposed against opposite edges of the said projections, and having recesses for receiving the second-mentioned members, there being an opening in a side of the tooth member in which a pin may be disposed for engaging one of" the projections for prying the tooth member fromthe first-mentioned member.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
