B. L. GREGG.
TOE WEIGHT.
No. 467,779. Patented Jan. 26, 1892.
" NITED STATES ELI VOOD L. GREGG,
OF HOXIE, KANSAS.
TOE-WEIGHT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,779, dated January 26, 1892.
Application filed October 3, 1891.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELWOOD L. GREGG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Hoxie, in the county of Sheridan and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toe-\Veights; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in toe-weights for horseshoes, and the same is designed more especially as an improvement upon my patent, dated January 7, 1890, No. 418,945.
My present invention consists in the improved construction and combination of the parts, as Will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical section showing my invention applied to a horseshoe. Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken on the line as w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view showing the parts detached.
A refers to a horseshoe, which is cut away or recessed at its front or toe portion to receive the end of a clip B, which is preferably riveted to the shoe, as set forth in my prior patent. This clip is constructed in the usual manner.
0 refers to the toe-weight, the rear side of which is recessed to receive the upper end of the clip, and beyond this recess D the weight is provided with a dovetailed recess E and above the same with an aperture 6, adapted to receive the shank of a bolt F, the upper end of the aperture being countersunk to receive the head of the bolt. At right angles with this aperture is a countersunk and screw-threaded aperture, which receives a screw 9, adapt-ed to jam against the shank of the bolt F.
H refers to a slide having beveled sides to adapt it to fit snugly within the dovetailed Serial No. 407,636. (No model.)
recess E, and on one side has formed integral therewith a lug h, the upper end of which 1s beveled to fit the upper inclined wall of the slot in the clip 13. The longitudinal aperture in the slide H is screw-threaded to receive the bolt F.
By means of the construction herein shown I provide a toe-weight which can be readily attached to the clip and in which the parts are not liable to become detached. It will also be noted that I dispense entirely with external nuts and am enabled to use bolts as ordinarily manufactured, thus reducing to a great extent the cost of the article. Vlllll the construction shown there is no liability of the toe-weight becoming clogged with dirt, nor is the end of the bolt liable to be struck when the device is in use, and in removing and attaching the same to a shoe all the parts remain connected.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. In a toe-weight, the combination, with the clip, of a weight having a dovetailed or undercut recess, a slide adapted to move therein and engage with the clip, said slide having a screw-threaded aperture, and a bolt for engagement with said slide to retain the same in the recess, substantially as set forth.
2. In a toe-weight, the combination of a clip having a slot formed in the upwardly-projecting portion thereof, of a weight having a recess within which the upper portion of the clip will lie, a dovetailed recess beyond the same, and a bolt-receiving aperture on a line with said dovetailed recess, a slide I-I, having a lug h, which enters the slot in the clip, the front portion of the slide having the threaded aperture with which the bolt engages, the head of said bolt bearing upon the upper portion of the weight, and a bolt for actuating the slide, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in atoe-weight having a recess which is adapted to receive the upwardly-projecting portion of a clip, of a dovetailed recess located beyond the same, an aperture intersecting said dovetailed recess, and a slide having a lug with a beveled end which fits the beveled end of the slot formed In testimony whereof I affix my signature in in the clip, together with a bolt having a presence of two witnesses. threaded portion which engages with the slide, and a looking-screw 9, carried by the ELWOOD L. GREGG.
upper portion of the toerweight and adapted. *vVitnesses: to jam against the shank of the bolt which W. F. QUISENBERRY, aetuates the slide, substantially as set forth. M. E. THORPE.
