UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDRE\V T. MOATS, OF PLEASANTVILLE, IOVA.
PICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part: of Letters Patent No. 342,704 dated May 25, 1886.
Application tiled October 10, 1885. Serial No. 111L548. (No inodeh) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW T. llIOATS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pleasantville, in the county of Marion and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference bei ng had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. 7
My invention relates to certain improvements in picks, which improvements are hereinafter described and set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a side View of a pick constructed in accordance with my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views.
A represents the handle of a pick, which is provided at its end with a metallic socket, B, said socket being provided on opposite sides with openings I), for the reception of a rivet; by means of which the socket is firmly attached to the handle. The metallic socket B, hereinbefore referred to, is provided with a transverse opening, 0, the underside of which is provided with shoulders, as shown at 0, against which the end of the handle of the pick will abut. The end of the socket B is provided wit-h an opening, a, through which passes the shank of a bolt, D, the head of said bolt lying within the recess 0, and being provided with perforations in which a pin may be inserted for turning the same.
The pick-blade is of the usual configura- Before attaching the metallic socket B to the handle the shank of the bolt is passed through the opening a, so that the head will be located within the recess 0. The end of the handle is then inserted in the lower end of the socket, and made fast thereto by means of a single rivet. It will be readily seen by this construction that the bolt cannot become displaced.
- The pick-blade is attached to the metallic socket by placing the shank of the bolt within the screw-threaded eye and tn rning the same.
The above-described invention is designed as an improvement upon my patent dated May 19, 1885, said patent being numbered 318,279, and by the construction hcrcinhefore described I dispense with the locking key.
Iclaim- The combination, with a pick having a screw-threaded eye, of a metallic socket, B, having a longitudinal and transverse opening, a screw-threaded bolt, D, having a perforated head, said bolt passing through the longitudinal opening, its head being retained in said opening by a shoulder therein, and screwing into the eye of the pick, and a handle secured in said socket above its transverse opening by a bolt passing through perforations in the handle and socket, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDR-EV T. MOATS.
