ROCKING-CHAIR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,315, dated January 4,, 1887.

Application filed March 8, 1886.

Be it known that I, GEORGE F. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Long Branch, in the county of Monmouth, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocking-Chairs, of which the following is a specification, refer ence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

.This invent-ion relates to rocking-chairs, and more particularly to that class thereof which are suspended upon hangers; and the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a Vertical section of the frame-work of a chair and base embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, and Fig. 3 is a detail illustrating a modification.

Like letters indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.

A represents a base, which may be of any desired design, and which is perforated, as at A, in the form of bearings for hangers B. The only requisite in the design of the base is that it shall have open spaces for the passage and swinging movement of the hangers employed to support the chair thereon.

0 represents the chair, the frame-work of which, in this instance, is extended below the seat-rail C thereof in the form of brackets or legs 0 which are perforated, as at O in the form of bearings for the ban gers B. When, however, it is desired to embody my invention in chairs whichare not provided with the legs or brackets 0 I provide standards 0, (see Fig. 3,) .of metal, perforated in the form of bearings, as at O and having at their upper ends attaching-plates 0, whereby the same may be secured to the seat portion of g the framework of such chairs, in order that they may be mounted upon a suitable base provided with my hangers.

Near the shouldered end ofthe shaftthere is provided a downwardlyprojecting suspension-arm, B, which is bent outwardly and provided with a journal, B, and shoulder B, similar to the bearing and journal B and shoulder B but the suspension arm is extended laterally after being bent, soas to bring the two journals into different vertical planes, in order that when the journal of the shaft is mounted in the base A the journal portion of the suspension-arm will pass through the base A and extend into the V bearing O formed in the brackets of the chair-frame or their described equivalent.

A coupling, D, is employed with each pair of suspension-shafts in such a manner that said shafts are inserted into each end of the coupling, and secured therein by set-screws D. When, however, screw threads B are formed on theends of the shafts, the coupling is interiorly threaded right and left, to fit, respectively, the right and left threads of the shafts.

This being the construction, it will be seen that each of the hangers or suspension-shafts can be separately inserted into the bearings provided for them in the base, and the coupling subsequently moved from one shaft onto the other and secured in position, so that the chair may be suspended upon the base without taking the frame-work of either apart.

Having described my invention and its operation, what I claim is- 1. In a chair of the class described, suspension-hangers having a connecting and supporting shaft made in separable parts and provided with a coupling device, substantially as specified.

2. In a chair of the class described, the combination, with the chair-frame provided with bearings for a hanger, of a base provided with similar bearings, separable hanger, connecting and supporting shafts, and couplers for the same, 'substantially as specified.

3. The hanger B, provided with the journals B shoulder B and suspension-arm B, bent as described, and provided with the journal and described.

4. The combination, with a base having bearings for a hanger and openings for the suspension-arm thereof, ofa chair-frame havings bearings for said suspension-arms, and ot a coupling mounted on the separated connecting and supporting shaft of the said suspension-arms, substantially as specified.
