Description

p 3 1955 c. z. BOROCHFF 2,718916 1 Sept. 27,1955 c. z. BOROCHOFF 2713916 SETTEE AND GLIDER Filed 0ct. 1, 1948 2 Sheecs-Sheet 2 FI'G.
ATTOR N EY United States Patent O SETTEE AND GLIDER Charles Zachary Borchoff, Atlanta, Ga., assignor t0 Southem Wire & Iren Werks, Atlanta, Ga., a partnership Application October 1, 1948, Serial N0. 52,370
1 Claim. (C1. 155112) This inventiou has for its object to provide a novel construction of a chair er settee (dependcnt on the length ef the seat and back sectious) which may be either a glider er not and in which great resiliency ef the seat is provided with ample rigidity and for this purpose cousists ef a nevel arrangeruent of parts and mcthed of assernblage as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring now to the drawings, in which corresponding parts are indicated by correspending marks of refereuce Figure 1 is a perspective view cf a settee embodyiug this inveution.
Figure 2 is the sarne censtructiou wheu ernbodied in a glider.
Figure 3 is a fragmeutal vertical sectien frem the freut to the rear of the settee shown in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a detail shewiug a step in the method of assemblage.
Figure 5 is a fragmental view ou an enlarged scale ef the method of fasteuing the freut and rear cf the seat strap and the bottoru of the back straps.
Figure 6 is a detail showing the manner in which the hangers 11 are conuected to the rest of the frarne.
T0 form the frame there is provided two U-shaped ends 1 of tubular er channel constructiou, the lower halves of which ferm the bases 1a and the legs and the other half of which forms the arms 1b, the two ends being conuected by the bar 2 bolted at its ends to the bases 1a, and by the freut er seat bar 3. The seat bar has its ends beut at right angles and the bent portious are bolted to the vertical portiens of the and members by bolts 4a. T0 permit vertical adjustmeut of the seat bar a serics of holes 4b may be formed in the legs.
The seat is formed by the spaced resilient straps 5 fastened at their freut eud to the upper face of the freut seat bar, their rear ends beiug inserted between the two rear seat bars 6 and 6a.
The back is formed by the metallic straps 7 whose lower ends are inserted between the two rear seat bars 6 and 6a in the spaces between the seat straps 5.
Bach back strap has a ribbed plate 7a on its rear surface and through these ribs exteuds a tie bolt 8 the ends cf which are extended through the arms 1b near the rear thereof.
Resiliency in the seat is secured by bendiug the freut ends of the seat straps dewu, then rearwardly and theu forwardly into a U-shape, the fastening to the freut seat bar beiug made by bolts 5a passing through the ends of the lower limbs of the U and through the freut bar. Washers 5b are placed in the U-beuds ef the straps 5 to eliminate the springing er drawiug of the strap portions in the U-bend together and thus facilitate the tighteuing of the bolts 5a.
In assembling the chair the end pieces are cennected by the tie 2 and the freut seat bar, and the seat straps for the entire seat unit are then bolted to the latter and their rear ends inserted and fasteued between the rear bars 6 and 6a. The lewer ends of the back straps are then inserted between the rear bars and the tie holt 8 is then inserted through the ribs ou the rear of the back straps.
At this stage the entire seat and back section is assembled, but due to the limited initial bend at the freut of the seat straps the seat has its upper end above its inteuded final position (cempare Figs. 3 and 4). The back of the seat is then forced down into its intended posiiton by flexing the seat straps at their freut ends. When in place the sectiou is locked by passing the ends of the holt 8 through the ends cf the arms.
There is also provided means convertiug the above chair into a glider. These consist of two arched membars 9 tied together by the ties 10 and 10a and located eu the outside of the end pieces. Ou the horizontal part ef each member is pivoted at lla-lla two dependent haugers 11, oue towards the freut and the other towards the rear, the lower ends ef which are pivoted to the base 1a at 11b. As the end pieces cf the chair and the rnembars 9 are in difl?erent vertical planes the two ends ef these hangers are olfset laterally frem each ether by the baut portien (Figs. 2 and 6) thus causing a centering of the seat. By prefereuce the rear hangers are shorter than those towards the freut as thereby a swingiug and a gliding sensation is produced. T0 strengthen the and pieces 1 agaiust distortien braces 12 may exteud frem the arms at a point above the freut bar te the base section.
Having thus described my inveution, What I claim is:
A chair er settee structure comprising two U-shaped members, forming bases, legs and arms, a rod securing said members tegether in spaced relation, a freut seat bar supported by said U-shaped members, a rear seat bar, one piece seat straps ef pretensioned metal free of protuberences attached to said rear seat bar and having their freut ends curved dowuwardly and inwardly resting upon and attached to said freut seat bar, back straps having their lower ends securing to said rear seat bar, means engagiug said back straps intermediate their ends and aflixed to the arms of the U-shaped members, said back straps and said means serving te maiutaiu said seat straps in a state of cempressien, and meaus for varyiug the height of the freut ends of the seat straps.
