CHAIR Application filed June 26,
This invention relates to improvements in chairs and has particular reference to a chair which is especially useful in store equipment, such as shoe establishments.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved chair of simple, practical and in expensive construction which is capable of constituting a unit of an assembled row of chairs.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detailed description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea. In the drawings- I Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a plurality of the chairs arranged in an assembled row;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through one of the chairs;
Figure 3 is a rear elevation of one complete chair with portions of other chairs arranged on opposite sides thereof in the assembled row;
Figure 1 is a front elevation;
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing the manner of securing adjacent chairs together; and
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 5, illustrating the assembly as applied to a single chair.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the numerals 10 and 11 indicate generally the seat and back of each 0 chair, each of said elements having a base 12 including the reinforcing strips 13 extending around the marginal edges thereof and forming securing means for the upholstery of said elements. The framework of an individual chair comprises side members, each preferably formed of a single length of rod or tubing bent to provide a front leg 14;, a substantially horizontal arm 15, and a bent rear leg 16. When a number of the chairs are assembled in a row each side member, with the exception of those at the extremities of the row, is common to two adjacent chairs, as
shown in Figure 1.
To mount the seat section of each chair in position, a pair of supporting bars 17 are we 1531'. Serial no. 546,955.
tended transversely across the base of said seat and connected to the front and rear legs 14 and 16 in a manner to be presently described. The bar 17 extending between the rear legs and along the rear edge of the seat is secured to the base 12 by screws 18 which extend through said base and into the adjacent reinforcing strip 13. The bar joining the front legs 14 extends across the base 12 in spaced relation to the front edge of the seat and is also secured to said base by screws 18.
When in an assembled row, each of the intermediate side members constitutes a means for attaching the supporting bars 17 of ad- 65 jacent chairs thereto, as shown in Figure 5. For this purpose, each bar 17 is provided with a lateral extension 19 at each end which abuts against the adjacent front or rear leg of one of the end members. Said extensions are apertured and the apertures therein are aligned with an opening formed in a leg of the end member so as to receive a securing bolt 20 therethrough. As shown in Figure 6, a similar construction is employed which is adapted for an individual chair, or for the two extreme side members at the ends of a row of chairs. With this construction, it will be apparent that a single chair or row thereof may be easily and quickly assembled and the ele ments thereof taken apart for purposes of repalr.
In a similar manner the back 11 of each chair is secured in position, the supporting bars 21 and 22 being used for this purpose. The bar 21 extends between and has its ends secured to the rear legs 16 in the same manner as described in connection with the bars 17 and is attached to the lower edge of the back 11 while the bar 22 extends across the base 12 of said back and is secured to said rear legs adjacent the arms 15.
Vfhat is claimed is 1. A chair comprising inverted substantially U-shaped end frame members, a seat and a back fixedly secured separately between said end members, fastening means for said seat and back including angular extensions secured to said end members, and means to secure said extensions to said members.
2. A chair construction comprising a plurality of inverted substantially U-shaped members, seats and backs fixedly mounted separately on opposite sides of one of said U-shaped members, supporting elements for said seats and backs, each having an angular extension engageable with said U-shaped member in line with the point of engagement of an extension of another of said elements with said U-shaped member on the opposite side thereof, and means common to adjacent extensions for fastening the same to said U- shaped member.
In testimony whereof, I have aifixed my signature.
FRANK SOB'EL.
