To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN Suva, a cltizen of the Dominion of Canada, and residing at Bryant, in the county of Hamlin and State.

of South Dakota, United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocking-Chairs, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates in general to furniture and more particularly to a novel form of rocking chair of that type comprising a fixed base or stand and a seat loosely connected to the stand and designed to rock thereon.

The object of the'invention is to provide a strong and durable chair of this type comprising few and simple parts which can be cheaply manufactured and quickly assembled to produce the finished article.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for eifecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a rocking chair constructed in accordance with the present invention, a portion thereof being broken away. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the rocking chair with the seat removed. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view through the same.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The fixed base or stand of the chair comprises the two oppositely disposed side pieces 1 having the upper edges thereof curved upwardly as indicated at 2. The seat 3 which may be of any conventional construction is formed with the side pieces 4 corresponding to and resting upon the side pieces 1 of the stand. The lower edges of the side pieces 1 are curved downwardly indicated at 5 and are designed to roll upon the upwardly curved portions 2 of the stand and impart an oscillatory movement to the chair seat.

In order to prevent relative displacement of the seat and stand, a pair of link members 6 and 7 are employed to loosely connect the said members. The link 6 com prises the two spaced and approximately parallel bars 8 having their end portions connected by the transverse rods 9, the extremities of which project beyond the bars 8 and are j ournaled in the opposite ends of the side pieces 1 and 1 of the chair seat and stand respectively. The link member 7 fits within the link member 6 and is inclined in an opposite direction. In the specific construction of the link member 7 the same comprises the side bars 10 connected at an intermediate point by the spoke 11 and at. their opposite ends by the transverse rods 12 the extremities of which project beyond the bars 10 and are journaled inthe side pieces and 1 of the chair in a manner similar to that previously described in connection with the transverse rods 9 of the link member 6. It will thus be apparent that while these two link members 6 and 7 permit the side pieces 5 to rock freely upon the side pieces 1 of the stand, the said members are securely held against displacement.

For the purpose of preventing the side bars of the link members 6 and 7 from working inwardly upon the transverse rods connecting the same, the said rods 9 and 12 may be provided with the shoulders or enlargements 13 bearing against the inner faces of the bars. In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawing the side bars 10 of the link 7 are shown as having an approximately circular section, while the side bars 8 of the link 6 have an approximately semicircular cross section, the fiat face of the bars being located adjacent the side pieces 5 and 1 of the chair. A transverse beam 14 connects the opposite side pieces 5 carried by the seat and is brought successively into engagement with the two link members 6 and 7, thereby limiting the rocking movement of the seat. An additional stop is provided to limit the rearward swingof the chair 6, and this stop is in the nature of lugs 16 carried by the rear ends of the side pieces 5 and designed to engage with corresponding projections 15 upon the sides 1 of the stand. If found desirable the seat 3 may be provided with any convensame does not constitute any part of the present invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

The herein described rocking chair, comprising a stand embodying side pieces and rods connecting said side pieces together at their ends, a seat and a pair of side pieces secured thereto and mounted to rock upon the side pieces of the stand, transverse rods tional form of back and arms, although the connecting together the side pieces of the seat near the ends thereof, one of the rods of the stand and the diagonally opposite rod of the seat being formed near their ends with outwardly facing shoulders, link members mounted upon the ends of the two last named rods and adapted to abut against said shoulders to prevent the movement of said link members toward each other, two other link members mounted between the first named link members and mounted upon the other rods of the seat and stand respectively, said last named rods being also formed with inwardly facing shoulders against which the last named link members abut, whereby to prevent the movement of said members toward each other, and a spoke connecting said last named members together intermediate of their ends and preventing the outward movement of said link members.
