SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,799, dated December 21, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES MoGoNAnY, of New Castle, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for,

vet, or other yielding material; but such holders are limited as to the size of the ring they will contain, and very wide rings or bracelets require boxes or holders of special-size.

It is the purpose of my invention to supply the trade with a holder adapted equally well for wide or narrow rings or bracelets, thus avoiding the necessity of using a number of holders of different sizes.

The invention consists in the combination, with a box or casing, of two pivotally-secured clamps, each provided with a spring.

The invention further consists in combining with a ring box or tray and my improved clampsa slotted plate supported below the clamps to receive a ribbon, as will be hereinafter fully described.

The invention further consists in the details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents one of my improved holders in perspective. Fig. 2 is a section on the line as a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows anumber of the holders combined in one case. Fig. 4 illustrates a blank from which the casing of the holder is formed. Fig. 5 is a transverse section showing my improved ribbon-holding plate combined with the clamps. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the ribbon-holding plate detached. 7, 8, and 9 illustrate modified constructions of the box and clamps. Fig. 10 is a View ofa blank from which the modified form of box may be constructed. Fig. 11 is a section of a Figs.

and Fig. 12 is a view in section of another modification'of box and clamp so constructed as to dispense with pivot-supports.

A represents the holder-casing,- preferably formed from a single piece of sheet metal. Each end B of the casing is formed with horizontal elongated slots 1) b, adapted to receive the pivots c c of the clamps O C. These clamps I prefer to make semi-cylindrical in crosssection, as shown, and centrally under each clamp is arranged a spiral or other spring, D. If spiral springs are employed, as shown in the drawings, a recess, 6, is formed on the under side of each clamp O to receive one end of the spring, and the other end of the spring is arranged upon a stud, F, projecting from the adjacent side of the casing.

The device constructed as thus described is designed to be suitably covered with velvet, plush, or similar material to conceal the parts.

It will be apparent that by the insertion of a ring or bracelet between the two clamps, the latter will turn upon the pivots, and if the width of the article thus inserted is sufficient the clamp-pivots will slide within the slots b b. The springs of the clamps t'orce'the clamps to-" Ward each other to firmly embrace and grip the article being held, whether the latterbe wide or narrow. It will be seen that the clamps have both an oscillatory and a lateral movement at the same time, and that they are adapted to hold firmly rings or bracelets of different widths.

The clamps G0 are identical in form, and may be interchanged at will.

While each holder as above constructed'is complete in itself, I may combine a number of them together in one case, as shown in Fig. 3, with a cover, Z, of velvet or other material, provided with slits 2, corresponding to the spaces between the clamps.

It will be apparent that various modifications of my improvement may be resorted to without departing from my invention. For instance, instead of employing the pivots upon the clamps O G, I may use a box of the form seen in Figs. 8 and 9,.consisting of sides G G, secured attheir lower ends to a bottom, g. The upper ends of the sides G G are bent upon themselves to form bearings h for pivot-shafts H. The clamps are each formed on their outer sides with a pair of slotted lugs or wings, I I,- which embrace the upper ends of the sides G G and receive the pivot-shafts, as seen in Figs. 8 and 9; or, if preferred, the sides of the box may be extended and bent upon themselves, as seen in Fig. 12, to form fulcrum-bearings J J, and the clamps in such instanceare grooved or bent to fit over such bearings without the aid of pivots.

In Figs. 5, 6, and 7 I have shownmy improved ribbon-holding device, which consists of a plate, K having do wnwardly-turned sides formed with elongated slots 70, corresponding in width to the width of the clamps. This plate K is secured below the clamps and between them upon a stud, l, or by other means. In using this ribbon-holding device I pass a ribbon,M,firstinto the box through a slot,m,in one side of the box A, and then out through a second slot, m, then downwardly over the adjacent'clamp, then under one side of the plate Kand upward through the slot k, over the plate K, down through the other slot k, and then up over the other clamp and through the slot-sin the other side of the casing, all as clearly ribbon-holding plate K serves also as a stop for the article being held, preventing the latter from sinking too deeply between the clamps.
