JEWEL-CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,548, dated July 27, 1880.

Application filed February 27, 1880 To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. E. GURLEY, of Danville, in the county of Vermillion and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in. Jewel'Oases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of to this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

The drawing is a representation of a perspective view of my improved jewel-case.

'This invention has relation to improvements in receptacles for jewels or badges used in se cret or other societies and the nature of the invention consists in a box composed of two sections of equal depth, and hinged together to fold the one upon the other, which sections have cushioned bottoms, and are provided with a wooden bottom resting upon the cushion and having recesses of the form of the jewels or badges cut through it, the jewels or badges being seated in the slots on the cush- 2 5 ions and maintained therein by hinged pads, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the annexed drawing, the letters A A designate the halves of my improved jewelcase,.hinged together at a, and kept closed, if

0 desired, by a suitable catch. The bottoms of the sections A A are cushioned with velvet, plush, or other suitable material.

B indicates thin wooden plates fitting snugly inside of the sections, between their side and 3 5 end walls, and resting on the cushioned bottoms thereof, being secured in place by means of suitable screws. These boards are slotted at intervals, as shown. at b, the slots being of the exact form of the jewel or badge, which,

0 when placed in position, rests upon the cushion, and is thereby prevented from becoming defaced. The pockets b in the plates prevent the jewels from leaving their places relative to each other in whatever position the case be held when the vibrating pads O are closed down 4 5 upon the jewels, as shown in Fig.1. They are thus prevented from being scratched by contact with each other.

The pads are generally made of pasteboard or other like material, covered with velvet or plush, and hinged to the sections A A, so as to be thrown back and expose the jewels at both sides of the case.

The case above described may be made of various sizes, according to the number of jewels to be placed therein, and, if desired, the pockets on one side thereof may be dispensed with.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A jewel-case for secret or other societies, having a cushioned bottom, a wooden plate fitting in said case, resting on its cushion, and provided with slots of the form of the jewels, and a pad closing down on the pockets and confining the jewels therein, substantially as specified.

2. The jewelease consisting of the half-sections A A, having cushioned bottoms, the

plates having jewel-form slots 1), resting on the cushioned bottoms, and forming therewith jewel pockets, and the oppositely opening pads closing down upon the pockets and holding the jewels in place, substantially as specified.
