PIKTENTEU mac 8 I976 INVENTOR. RICHARD W. KRE/VZ III!!! TTOR/VE Y cqusiuauou acstaaox ANDl-THA BACKGROUND or THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention I A combination tackle box and chair in which an L-shaped cabinet forms a seatandalower backrest, and in which a compartment hinged to the, cabinet when it is in closed position with the cabinet, rests on the seat, and when in open position providesan upper backrest.
2. Description of the Prior ,Art
The prior art known to applicant comprises the following patents: U.S.fPa L'No. 2,264,744, to Dunnam, issued Dec. 2, 1941; U.S. Pat. No. 2,357,2l4j, to McDole, is issued Aug. 29, 1944; U.S. Pat. No. 3',I28,l37, to Dokter, issued Apr. 7, I964; U.S. Pat. No.,3,206,266, to Holloway et al. issued Sept. 14, 1965; U.S. Pat..No. 3,284,150, to Cline, issued Nov. 8, 1966;
and U.S. Pat. No. 3,230,006, to Sokolis, issued Jan. 18, 1966.
, Each'of the structures shown in the above-mentioned patents requires expensive-tooling to manufacture the same. Applicant has reduced the cost of manufacture by utilizing standard parts that can be purchased in hardware stores, and thus materially reduced the-cost of the ultimate structure.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The combination comprises a base forming at least one compartment. A cover is hinged to the walls forming the compartment. Another compartment is fixed to the base and is disposed above the cover and is hinged to the second mentioned compartment whereby it can be swung from above the cover to above the second mentioned compartment. When in BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. I is a perspective view of the combination tackle box and-chair showing the same in the position in which it is carried normally; I i F IG. 2 is a perspective view of the combination showing the same as being capable of use as a tackle box and chair; and
FIG. 3 is a sectional view taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 1. DESCRIPTIONOF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring more in detail to the drawing, the combination tackle box and chair 20 includes an L-shaped cabinet 22. This cabinet includes a base '24 having a bottom wall 26, upright front, rear and side walls 28,30, 32 and 34, respectively. Those walls together with an intermediate upright wall 36 form a front compartment 38 and a rear compartment 40. A
top wall 42 is provided for the rear compartment 40. This latter wall also'extends forwardly of the partition wall 36 and partly over the rear of front compartment 38.
The rear wall includes a door 44 which is hinged at thetop by a hinge 46 and is held in latch position by latches fixed to the opposite side walls 32 and 34, the latch on wall 34 being shown at 48, the latch being shown on wall 32 by dotted lines in FIG. 3.
The L-shaped cabinet 22 also includes an upper rear compartment 50, the bottom wall of which is common with the upper wall 42 f rear base compartment 40. Compartment 50 includes anupright front 52, and the lower part of the rear wall'is formed by the upper part of the rear wall 30. The side walls 32 and 34 are L-shape d'and form the side walls, not only for base compartments 38 and 40, but also the side walls for compartment 50. The compartment 50 includes a top wall 54.
The rear wall of compartment 50 includes a door 56 which is hinged by a hinge 58 to wall 30. It is latched in position like door 44 by latches 60. I I
A fourth compartment 62 is hinged by hinge 64 to the upper front edge of compartment 50. In compacted position, as shown in FIG. 1 and 3, compartment 62 includes a top wall 66, depending front, rear and sidewalls 68, 70, 72, and 74, and a hinged bottom wall 76, hingedto the front wall 68 by a hinge 78 and latched in position by latch 80. Compartment 62 is latched in compacted position by a hook 82'which is pivoted by pin 84 to side wall 74 and hooked over pin 86 on side wall 34 of the base 24.
Compartment 62 after being unlatched and being hinged as shown, can be moved from the compacted position, shown in FIGS. 1 and 3, to the position shown in FIG. 2. In this second position, the wall 76 becomes the top wall of compartment 62, and being hinged, provides a removal cover for the then opentop compartment 62.
The base compartment 38 is provided with a pivotally mounted cover 88. This cover88 rests on the front wall 28 and side walls 32 and 34 of. the compartment 38. It is hinged to side wall 32 by hinge 90, and latched in closed position by a latch 92 on side wall 34. p
The top cover 88 forms a seat and carries a cushion 94 which, if desirable, may be secured to the cover. The front wall 52 of compartment 50 forms a backrest and has a cushion 96 secured thereto. As viewed in FIG. 3, the lower portion of the rear wall 70 of hinged compartment 62 has a cushion 98 secured thereto. A cushion 100 is hinged to cushion 98 by a flexible hinge 102. As shown in FIG. 2, when the combination is in chair position, cushion 100 is folded forwardly of cushion 98 and forms a cushion backrest.
The-bottom wall 26, the front wall 28, the partition wall 36, the rear wall 30, the top walls 42 and 54 and the front wall 52 of the L-shaped cabinet may be formed integrally and of plastic. The side walls 32 and 34 are secured to the opposite edges of the aforementioned walls. Also the top wall 66, the front wall 68 and the side walls 72 and 74 of compartment 62 may be formed integrally and of plastic.
A handle 104 is removably. carried by the top wall 66 of compartment 62'wher'eby, when removed, the wall 66 of corn partment 62 can rest directly on the top wall 54 of compartment 50.
Suitable runners'l06 are fixed to the bottom wall 26 of base My invention being made of plastic, I have provided a lightweight, rectangularly shaped, multiple compartment tackle box which can be converted readily to a chair having a backrest while still retaining'all compartments as such.
