SAFETY ENVELOPE Patented Dec. '7
N. PETER5. Phowumo hm. Washington. D. C,
PATENT Omen.
JACOB E. KRUOKER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES GULATH, OF SAME PLACE.
SAFETY-ENVELOPE, aw.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,066, dated December '7, 1886.
Application filed January 18, 1886. Serial No. 188,977. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ACOB E. KRUOKER, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Innprovernent in Safety-Envelopes, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this to specification, and in which Figure l isa View of my envelope-blank opened out. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same with the end flaps folded and theloekingtongues projected ready for engagement. Fig.
3 is a like view with the lower flap folded and the tongues engaged through the slots. .Fig. 4is a perspective view showing the fourth step in closing my fastening device, with the upper flap folded and the locking-tongues passed through slots in the same, folded down and attached. Fig. 5 is a like view with the points of the upper flaps folded and secured over the points of the locking-tongues.
My invention relates to devices for safety of 2 the seals of envelopes; and my invention consists in features of novelty, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
The invention has for its objects to provide certain improved means for fastening envel- 0 opes, &c., that will plainly indicate if the same has been tampered with.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters designate like parts in the several figures, A represents one of my improved safetyenvelopes; B B, the end flaps to the same; 0, the lower and D the upper flap. The points of the end flaps are slit, to make a division and form locking-tongues E E. The points of the lower and upper flaps are provided with 0 twin slots F F and G G, respectvely, in which the locking-tongues engage when the flaps are folded. Thereare also slits H H, parallel with the slots in the upper flap, whcreby small supplemental flaps I Iare formed.
The sealing-edges J J of the upper andlower flaps and the gummed sides of the lockingtongues are shown by cross-lines, indicating the extent of the gummed surface.
The operation in fastening the envelope is as follows, (it being understood that the gummed surfaces are moistened preparatory to attachment:) The end flaps are first folded and the locking-tonguesE are turned up. (See Fig. 2.) The lower flap is then folded the locking-tongues passing through the slot-s in its point. (See Fig. 3.) The upper flap next being folded the tongues pass through the slots in its point, and are then folded down and attached. (SeeFig.4.) Thesupplemental flaps I I (seen folded back in Figs. 3 and 4) are then folded down and attached over the lockingtongues, (see Fig. 5,) which completes the operation.
I have shown my safety attachment as in use on an ordinary postal envelope; but I do not confine myself to such use, for it is evident that it can and may he used as a secure fastening to envelopes and packages for express and other purposes, of any form or size, without departing from the essential features of my invention.
I claim as my invention 1. In a safety-envelope, the end flaps arranged to fold together and having the lockingtongues, in combination with the upper 5 and lower flaps having slots which coincide when said flaps are folded over, and through which said locking-tongues pass, substantially as set forth.
2. In a safety-envelope, the combination of the end flaps, B B, having the lockingtongues E E, and the upper and lower flaps having the coinciding slots F and G, respectively, through which said tongues pass, and the supplemental flaps I, formed on the upper flap, substantially as described.
