SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,062, dated December 7, 1886.

T at whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Rosa JOEL and HENRY JOEL, both of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved lashing-Ma chine, of which the following specification is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a new machine for Washing clothing quickly and effectively; and
the invention consists in the various details of construction, as pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the machine with one/of the I5 ends of the suds-box removed to show the interior ot' the machine, the washingroller being omitted. Fig. 2is avertical section, partly in side view, of the same.
The letter A represents the body or box of the washing-machine, B being an upward eX- tension, grooved to receive the cover 0.
D is a corrugated curved wash-board, ex tending from side to side of boX A, and kept in place by ribs a, as shown.
E is a roller arranged to be oscillated above and parallel to the curve of wash-board D. The roller E is suspended by means of two arms, I), the upper parts of which are embraced by sleeves G, made in one piece with pins 9, that turn in bearings in the ends of box A.
Each of arms I) is confined in place by a pin above sleeve G, as shown. Each pin 9 passes through a washer, c, and is then keyed to an arm. (I. The lower part of arm (1 is slotted into by pins e, attached respectively to levers F F, of which the lever F is a hand-lever. The levers F F are both coupled to a rocktom of the machine, and thus by oscillating lever F the lever F will also be oscillated. In this way oscillating motion will, by means of pins e,t\'aveling in slots of arms d,and through sleevesG and arms b, be imparted to both ends of roller E.
The clothing is placed on board 'D, and the roller E is oscillated until the wash is cleaned.
The machine is very effective, strong, and inexpensive.
We claim as our invention-- The combination of suds box A, curved wash-board D, and roller E. connected to arms I), with pins 9, keyed to slotted arms (I, and with pins centering said arms and connected to levers F F, coupled to rock shalt f, that passes through bearings at the bottom of the suds box, substantially as specified.
