UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EPHRAIM K. DENNIS, OF NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
SAFETY-LOOP FOR HARNESS-CHECKS.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 353,484, dated November 30, 1886.
Application filed August .21, 1886. Serial No. 211,516. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EPHRAIM K. DENNIS, of New Bedlord, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Im proved Safety-Loop for Harness Cheeks, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to the loop, used on harness-checks or check-reins,which engages with the waterhook on the saddle; and it consists in a novel construction of said loop, substantially as hereinafter described, whereby the loop is prevented from becoming detached from the hook by the working or throwing of the horses head, that heretofore has been such a common and troublesome occurrence with the ordinary leather check-loop in use.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part oi this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a side View of a horse in part with harness check and my improved loop applied; Fig. 2, a top view, upon a larger seale,of the rear portion of the check-rein, with said loop, shown partly in section, attached; and Fig. 3,a side view in part, showing the improved loop engaged with the hook, the loop being in central section.
A is the cheek-rein, in adjustable connection bylooping it at its rear end, and by a buckle, I), applied to such turned-over portion, with the loop B, that engageswith the water-hook G on the saddle D.
The loop B, instead of beinga simpleleather one, as usual, is composed of a core or body part, c, of rigid or inflexible material, preferably of cast metal of any suitable kind, and a covering or partial covering, d, either ofleather suitably stitched over it or of rubber molded on or otherwise applied to it, the rubber "covering being preferred, as by it stitching, &c.,
This will prevent removal of the loop B from the hook O by any working or throwing of the horses head, the lip a holding the loop on the hook and preventing it from passing over the usual thickened outer end of the hook. \Vhen unchecking the horse, however, the holding or binding flexible lip e of the loop B will be flexed in a reverse direction out of line with.
the loop, and thus permit of the ready removal of the loop from the hook.'
The improvement is easily adjusted, maybe applied to any sized check or hook, and pre sents a neat appearance and finish.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As an improved article of manufacture, the check-rein loop, consisting of a rigid core ,or body part and a flexible covering or filling having a lip partly covering orprojecting into the eye of the loop, substantially as shown.
2. The combination, with the saddle-hook and check-rein, of the loop consisting of the rigid or inflexible core or body part, and the flexible covering or filling having a lip partly covering or projecting into the eye of theloop,
' substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
EPHRAIM K. DENNIS.
