Description
T-. I, JACOBS. Lar lilp Chimney Holden; No. 35 ,239. Patented May 13, I862.
I Vz'tnessas:
N. PETERS. Phnlv-Ulhomphnr, Waiingtom'D-C- I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS THOMPSON JACOBS, OF MOUNTCARROLL, ILLINOIS.
AIAMPROVED MODE OFSECURING CHIMNEYS TO LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,239, dated May 13, 1862.
7 viding the upper part of a lamp-top with two clasps held and pressed on the chimney by a spring, which is operated by pressing the flat projecting portions of the clasps together wliere'the spring is situated, which'is attached to each of them for the purpose of allowing the chimneyto be raised andlowered perpendicularly when fitted on or taken off, and holding the chimney firmly when it is on the lamp-top. I
To enable others skilled in the-art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my clasps of brass or any other suitable metal to fit closely around the out side of the lamp-top, as shown at A, Figs. 1 and 2, and rivet them loosely to two ears projecting from the lamp-top, as shown at G G, Fig. 1, or .in any other convenient manner attach them to the lamp-top. I also provide my clasps with two projecting lips or catches, bent to the inside, as shown ate 0, Figs. 1 and 2, for the purpose of extending over the edge or rim of the chimney to secure it firmly, and at each end of the clasps I have a flat projecting portiomas shown at H H, Figs. 1 and 2, to which the spring D, Figs. 1 and 2, is attached at each end, as at B B, Figs. 1 and 2, and I also provide on the clasps on the out side of the flat projection ears large enough to receive the rivets and to hold the clasps to their places, as shown at F F, Figs. 1 and 2.
I operate my improvement by taking the chimney in one hand and with the thumb and forefinger of the other press the flat projecting portion of the clasps containing the spring together, and the chimney can be conveniently and expeditiously taken off or placed on the lamp-top without changing the perpendicular position of the chimney, thereby guarding against the fiame of the lamp striking on the inside of the chimney to crack it or to blacken it with smoke. It can then be held in any position without danger of the chimney getting loose or falling off.
hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, -is
The combination of the two clasps A A, each having two projecting lips or catches, a c, with the spring D, constructed, operated, and applied substantially as and for the purpose specified.
THOMAS THOMPSON JACOBS.
