UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED BLISS, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 34,125, dated January 14, 1862.
- same, taken in the line at 00, Fig. 1; Fig. 8, a
vertical section of the same, taken in the line y y, Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a detached edge view of the rim pertaining to the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The object of this invention is to obtain a means whereby glass chimneys may be attached to lamp tops in a secure manner and without danger of the same being broken while in the act of securing the chimney to the lamp-top nor by the expansion of the chimney by heat.
The invention consists in the employment or use of an annular metal clamp provided with a hinge or joint and inclined projections in connection with loops orlips attached to the lamp-top, the clamp being fitted on a flange at the lower end of the chimney, and the clamp secured to the lamp-top by means of its inclined projections fitting under the loops or lips on the lamp-top, as hereinafter fully shown and described.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a lamp-top, which is provided with a removable cone or deflector B, such as are now most generally used, and O is a glass chimney, which may be of the usual form and provided at its lower end witha flange a, which projects from it all around nearly at right angles, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 3.
D is an annular metal clamp, which is formed of two semicircular parts b 1), connected at one end by a hinge or joint 0. The opposite ends of the parts I) b are provided each with a plate d, which project at right angles from the parts I) b, and which, when said parts are closed or their disengaged ends in contact, lap over each other, as shown in at. The clamp D is of such dimensions that when closed it will encircle, but not tightly, the lower part of the chimney just above the flange a, and also fit in the upper part of the lamp-top A on the base of the cone or deflector B.
Each part b of the clamp is provided with a projection 6. These projections extend a trifle upward above the surface of clamp, and their upper surfaces are inclined planes, as shown clearly in Fig. 4. The projections e e are at opposite points on the clamp, one being near the hinge or joint 0 and the other near the disengaged end of its part b, as shown in Fig. 2.
On the upperpart of the lamp-top A there are secured two loops or lips ff, which proj ect upward at such a height that the inclined projections e e of the clamp may pass underneath them. The loops or lips ff are also slightly inclined at their under surfaces, corresponding to the inclination of the projections e e of the clamp, and are secured to the lamp-top at the ends of openings g g, which are made in its rim h to admit of the plates d d and hinge or joint 0 of the clamp turning a requisite distance to enable the projections e being passed underneath the loops or lips ff of the lamp-top.
From the above description it will be seen that in order to secure the chimney O to the lamp-top the clamp D is fitted to the lower part of the chimney O, and the clamp is then placed in the upper part of the lamp-top A and turned so that its inclined projections e 6 will pass underneath the loops or lips f f of the lamp-top. Bythis means the clamp D will be pressed down on the flange a of the chimney and the latter firmly secured to the lamptop. In consequence of having the clamp pressed down on the flange Ct of the chimney, the latter will be secured to the lamp-top without the liability of being broken by expansion, as the clamp does not pass laterally against the chimney, and the latter may be removed from the lamp-top, even when hot, by grasping the plates cl, which serve as a handle for that purpose, as well as for turning the clamp, in order to attach the chimney to the lamp-top. In order to detach the b I), connected together at one end by ahinge chimney from the lamp-top, the clamp D is or joint 0, in combination with the loops or turned until its projections e e are out from lips ff 0n the lamp-top A, substantially as underneath the loops or lips f f. and for the purpose herein set forth.
Having thus described my invention, what ALFRED BLISS.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- Witnesses:
ters Patent, is JAMES LAIRD,
The annular clamp D, formed of two parts RICHARDSON GAWLEY.
