To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GILBERT E. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York. in the count-y and State of4 New York, f have 'invented new and useful Improvements in Printers7 Galleys, of which the following is a speciiication. g

This invention relates to galleys used by printers; and' it consists in the construction of the' same, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of a galley containing my inventin, paris being broken away. Fig. 2 is a section in the plane a" at, Fi. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view, partly in section, of a modification of the construction shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan viewof a modiiication ot' the construction shown in Fig. 1.

In the drawings, the letter A indicates the base or bottom, and B C D indicate the sides, of a galleyframe.

E is a side-stick, which by being moved toward the side B will lock up the matter interposed between the side-stick and the side B ofthe galley-frame. One or more dogs, F F, are adapted to move the sidesticks E, so as to lock up the matter. The dogs F F are shown as being adapted to swing about `pins or pivots G. Said pins or pivots G are shown as being fixed to the base A, or othersuitable part of the galley-frame. By causing a dog,V F, to move from the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the sidestick E, resting against such dog F, will be moved toward the side B of the galley-frame, thus locking up matter that may be betweenthe sidestick E and the side B. The dogs F are shown as being provided with segmental gears, which engage with worm-screws II. By mounting or for1n ing the worni-screw II upon suitable bars or axles, I7 the worinscrews can be actuated as desired. The bars or axles I can be mounted or journaled in a side orany other convenient part of the galley-frame. The axles or bars I can be actuated in any suitable \vay-as, for example, by a finger-wheel, K, as shown in Figs. l, 2, and 4; or the axles or bars I can be formed with a suitably-shaped end or head, L, as seen in Fig. 3, for the reception of a crank or key or other actuating device. providing each die F with a worm-screw operating independently of the other wormscrews, as seen in Fig. 1, each dog can be actuated by itself, and can be caused to press upon the sidestick with greater or less force independently of the other dogs. This independent operation of the dogs F may be of advantage in case there is any unevennessf0r example in the side-stick E or in the mattei' to be locked up. Independentlyoperating 4wornrscrews H are shown in Fig. 1, where each worm-screw II is mounted upon its separate axle I. In Figs. 3 and 4c are shown wormscrews mounted upon a common bar or axle, I, whereby said Worm-screws H are caused to act conj ointly. In the case of the construction shown in Figs. l, 2, and 3 the dogs F are not connected to the side-stick E. In the case of the construction shown in Fig. 4t the dogs F are` pivoted or suitably connected with the sidestiek E.

The construction of galley above set forth furnishes means 'for locking up the matter securely,and theloclringup can be accomplished rapidly and easily.

Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with a galleyirame, of a pin or pivot connected to said frame, a dog mounted on said pin or pivot, a. segmental gear formed on the dog, and a worm-screw engaging this gear, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a galley-frame, of pins or pivots connected to said frame, two or more dogs mounted on said pins or pivots, segmental gears formed on said dogs, and a worm-screw journaled in the frame and engaging the segmental gears of the dogs, substantially as set forth. ,g

3. 'The combination, with a galley-frame, of a pin or pivot connected to said frame, a dog mounted on said pin or pivot, alsegmental gear formed on the dog, a side-stick connected to said dog, and a worm-screw engaging the gear oi' the dog7 substantially as set forth.
