W. GAST'. v Deviqe-frfiecllririg Forms on "Beds of: Printing Presses'.
No. 236,797. Patentedllan. 18, 1881-.
n WITNESSES v INVENTOR N. PETEKS PHDTQUTHDGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D C.
' UNITED STATES PATENT ()EEIcE.
WILLIAM GAST, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,797, dated January 18, 1881.
Application filed June 9, 1880. (No model.)
city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Securing Forms on Beds of Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to furnish, for the purpose of securing the forms on the beds of printing-presses, an improved device which can be adjusted to any size of form with great facility, and without the use of the blocks and wedges at present in use.
The invention consists of two parallel facebars, which are connected by two sets of toggle-levers, the intermediate pivots of said levers being connected to parallel toothed bars, which are guided in a common frame, and adapted for adjustment in either direction by a common pinion and pawl-and-ratchet device, so that the face-bars can be adjusted and locked closer to or farther away from each other.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top view of my improved device for securing forms on beds of printing-presses. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same on line w as, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the pinion and pawl-and-ratchet mechanism with the covering-plate removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings A A represent the parallel face bars, which are preferably ribbed or notched on their outer faces, and placed rebetween the toggle-levers B. A pinion, a, in
the center of the guide-frame Dis arranged to intermesh with the toothed bars 0, the bars beingretained in contact with the pinion by the guide-frame D. The pinion is turned by of a face-disk, a, of the pinion. By turning the pinion-in one direction the toothed bars are moved away from each other, so as to draw the face-bars A toward each other, while by turning the pinion in opposite direction the toothed bars are carried, by the action of the toggle-levers, to a greater or less distance away from each other. The face-bars may thereby be adjusted to any required distance from each other, according to the size of the form and the space between the same and the end flange of the bed-plate of the printing-press.
The face-disk a of the pinion a is provided with ratchet-teeth at its circumference, in to which a spring-pawl, b, is thrown, which retains the pinion, so as to lock thereby the toothed bars, levers, and face-bars into the exact position desired.
The device is quickly adjusted to the form by setting the face-bars by the pinion and key, or removed by withdrawing the spring-pawl from the ratchet, so that the distance between the face-bars can be reduced.
By the device considerable time is saved in securing the forms on the beds of printingpresses, while the form is firmly and reliably held in position, as soon as the locking device is properly set between the same and the bedplate of the press.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- The combination of parallel face-bars A A, connecting togglelevers B B, and intermediate parallel rack-bars O G, pivoted to the connecting-pins of the toggle-levers, with a guidecasing, D, for the rack-bars, and with an intermediate adj ustin g-pinion,a; ratcheted face-disk a, and lockin g spring-pawl 12, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 1st day of June, 1880.
WM. GAST.
